SESSION 6.3.3 Professional Associations & Networks possess the technical knowledge to ensure proper investments are made to address access to sanitation and water Experts in the area of science, engineering, research, utilities, public officials and regulators Associations & Networks maintain a focus on new, emerging issues related to water (e.g., Climate Change; Application of New Technologies) Understand how access to sanitation and water affect local, regional and national communities

SESSION 6.3.3 Professional Associations & Networks possess the credibility to support investment decisions Association & Network members are often responsible for providing sanitation and water services and are responsible for maintaining the “public trust” for safe sanitation and water Associations & Networks often maintain a “Code of Good Practice or Code of Ethics” and define standards and “best practices” for the water profession

SESSION 6.3.3 Professional Associations & Networks possess a diverse membership to address the complex issues of meeting the MDGs Association & Network members consist of representatives or partnerships of scientists, engineers, researchers, utility managers, public officials, regulators and the general public Associations & Networks understand that investments in meeting the MGDs must address the technical, economic, political and cultural aspects of access and service

SESSION 6.3.3 Professional Associations & Networks value long-term, sustainable solutions which translate into positive returns on investments Association & Network have learned from past “mistakes” of only focusing on short-term solutions for providing access to sanitation and water Associations & Networks understand that long-term, sustainable investments in sanitation and water must include tariffs, water management & efficiency and an approach to recovering the “full cost of service”

SESSION 6.3.3 Professional Associations & Networks enable effective advocacy for the need to invest in meeting the MDGs Association & Network understand the need educate the general public on water stewardship and their role in water Associations and Networks are learning how to better promote the mission of their organizations and how they relate to achieving the MDGs Associations & Networks are learning how to effectively influence public policy and regulations on water issues
