7 Guided Practice Medium --- TextMedium -- Video Evidence from the TextExplanation of what the evidence reveals about Ali Evidence from the FilmExplanation of what the evidence reveals about Ali “When has any of them ever seen the invincible Liston cut before? And when had his own attempts to hit an opponent been so futile? He looked as if he were trying to catch the wind” (page 236, paragraph 3) This quote highlights Cassius Clay as the champion he was confident he would become. Every talented fighter has their glory days and Clay was there to show Liston that his reign was over. In 1974, in a fight against George Foreman and broke the golden rule of boxing, letting himself get beat up in the ropes, so Foreman would tire and then Ali could emerge victorious. This reveals Ali is a superstar because he strategizes methods to help him win, even if they’re a little unorthodox. “Nobody at the weigh-in had ever seen anything like it. More than one writer was convinced that young Clay was crazy, and the physician … figured the fighter was scared to death” (page 236, paragraph 2) This excerpt indicates that the odds were stacked against Clay and not everyone shared his confidence in his abilities. Yet, he would later prove how unlikely candidates can defy the odds. In the 1996, Olympics in Atlanta Ali carried the torch This demonstrates superstar status because even after retirement he had the respect of other athletes and Americans. “Clay “ran” for about a minute and a half of round five, and then his eyes cleared…In any case and against all odds, Cassius Clay was now the heavyweight champion of the world” (page 237, paragraph 1) Clay’s faith in himself is confirmed when he wins the championship as illustrated in this passage. He overcame the numerous obstacles in a short amount of time and with the help of his trainer resisted giving up. Thus arriving at super star status. He finishes his boxing career with 56 wins and 5 losses; holding several championships Ali was successful in his boxing career and held this record throughout championships where he was the underdog. Angered at not being served at a whites-only restaurant, Ali throws his medal in the Ohio River This detail reveals Ali has high moral convictions surrounding racial equality.
