The Need for Substitute Care Parents rely on substitute care for their children for at least some amount of time It has become an increasingly popular trend

Need for Substitute Care Reasons for trend: Children live in 2-parent families, where both parents work Some live in single-parent home  parent works Some parents feel that their children can benefit by being with other children

Types of Substitute Care Home-based care Centre-Based care Care for Older children

Home Based Care Benefits: -surroundings are familiar -more available and convenient -Parents usually know the caregiver -Allows for individual attention

Home-based care 3-main types:  Care in the child’s home  can be costly! Nannies provide live-in child care. Some may require respite care  worker comes for a few hours

Career Look: Nanny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuN_vrIe O-0

Home-based care  Family child care  Small number of children are cared for by someone in their home. Provides comfort of a home setting with opportunities for social play. Plenty of individual attention. Costs less

Home-based care  Play groups: parents take turns caring for each other’s children in their homes. Different homes and different caregivers

Home-based care Disadvantages: backup options. If the person who runs family care becomes ill, he or she can’t care for children and parents will need to find a replacement

Teamwork Activity In groups of 2 or 3  plan a play group! Refer to your textbook for ideas. Decide on the basic rules, the daily routine, the number of children, and the objectives of your play group. Present your ideas to the class
