15L 9/6/11 OQC Do Now: Cells—True or False? Before (Guess!) Statement (Read the statement and guess if it is true or false!) After (Explain why it is true or false!) 1. In your body, cells live with similar cells and this is called tissues. 2. The organelles do all the work for the cell and need lots of energy. 3. The DNA of the cells is its genetic material and lives inside the mitochondria. 4. You have trillions of cells in your body, but you began as only one cell. 5. Your body grows because your cells grow bigger. Directions: Please copy into your notebook. Read each statement and in the left column, guess whether it is true or false.

Title: Cell Division Standard 1e: Students know that cells divide to increase their numbers through the process of mitosis. Objective: Students will explain and draw each new vocabulary word. Vocabulary Words: Please see page 16R. Notes: Brainpop– Mitosis (page 132) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Quickwrite: What is mitosis? What does it make? Why does a cell do it? Write a paragraph!!!

15R 9/6/11 OQC Notes: Brainpop-- Mitosis 1. When a cell divides, the ___________________ leads the way. 2. We call it mitosis when the nucleus divides into two ________________ nuclei. 3. Each cell offspring will have a ________________ set of chromosomes. 4. _________________ are two DNA molecules held together by a centromere. 5. Every ______________ cell has _____ chromosomes in all. 6. Mitosis has 4 steps: __________________, ___________________, ___________________, and ____________________. 7. After mitosis, the cell membrane splits and _____ whole new cells are formed. 8. Both __________ and ___________ cells do mitosis. 9. Organisms _________________ by cell division.

Brain Pop: Mitosis

15R 9/6/11 OQC Notes: Brainpop-- Mitosis 1. When a cell divides, the nucleus leads the way. 2. We call it mitosis when the nucleus divides into two identical nuclei. 3. Each cell offspring will have a complete set of chromosomes. 4. Chromosomes are two DNA molecules held together by a centromere. 5. Every human cell has 46 chromosomes in all. 6. Mitosis has 4 steps: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. 7. After mitosis, the cell membrane splits and TWO whole new cells are formed. 8. Both plant and animal cells do mitosis. 9. Organisms grow by cell division. Pair/Share (A with B and C with D)  “What is mitosis? What does it make?”

1. DNA (p. 135) the genetic code that is passed from parent to offspring

2. Chromatin (p. 132-133) Long and thin strands of unwound DNA (BEFORE mitosis)

3. Chromatid (p. 131) Short and thick, wound-up piece of DNA (during Mitosis)

4. Chromosome (p. 131) two identical chromatids that are connected in the middle (during mitosis)

5. Centromere (p. 131) The part that connects the two chromatids and makes a chromosome

6. Cell Cycle (p. 132-133) The time it takes for the cell to grow and divides; its “life cycle” that never ends

7. Interphase (p. 132) The time when the cell gets ready to divide (grows, copies DNA and organelles)

8. Mitosis (p. 132-133) When the nucleus divides in two

9. Cytokinesis (p. 133) When the cytoplasm and organelles separate (AFTER mitosis)

10. Centrioles (p. 132) Works with the spindle fibers to pull apart the chromosomes during mitosis

11. Spindle Fibers (p. 133) Works with the centrioles to pull apart the chromosomes during mitosis

12. Daughter Cells (p. 132) After cell division, these 2 new cells are identical to each other and to the parent cell

Homework: Please complete the “Helpful Sentence” Column on page 16L. Make sure and include the word in the sentence.

Name: Date: Period: Exit Pass: 1.What is the purpose of Mitosis??? 2. What must happen BEFORE mitosis??? 3. What does mitosis CREATE???
