3 Background Cont. F. Scott Fitzgerald was a member of the “Lost Generation” in the 1920s He wrote four novels, and his fifth was unfinished by him but was finished by someone else and published

4 Major Works His four novels were This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender is the Night, and The Great Gatsby. The fifth unfinished novel was The Love of the Last Tycoon His most famous work was The Great Gatsby

5 Early Life He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota He was born into an Irish Catholic Household Everyone referred to him as Scott not Francis

6 His first story was published when F. Scott Fitzgerald was 12, it was a detective story at his school He was expelled from St. Paul Academy when he was 16 and had to attend a new school In 1913 he attended Princeton University There he began writing for the Princeton Triangle Club

7 Influences The Princeton Triangle Club influenced him to write his novel Charles Scribner’s Sons This novel was rejected though

8 “Silver Girl” Zelda Sayre was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s fiance and his “silver girl” She left him though because he couldn’t support her which pushed him to work harder

9 Then This Side of Paradise was accepted and Zelda took him back He wrote this novel in the post-WWI flapper generation, which is what it was about His first writings reflect and was influenced by his first love, Ginevra King

10 Influenced Writers He influenced his wife, Zelda, to write her own book, Save Me the Waltz He was angry at her for this because he considered it his material

11 Death He died of a heart attack, while writing notes in the Princeton Alumni Weekly and eating a candy bar
