Where is everybody? Learning intention: To understand how the population is distributed across the globe, why this is the case and how it may affect wellbeing?

Key terminology Population density: the number of people within a given area, usually per square kilometre. Population distribution: the spread of people across the globe. Population density and distribution: http://www.fastcoexist.com/3016331/visualized/think-the-world-is-crowded- you-could-fit-the-entire-human-race-in-new-zealand#1http://www.fastcoexist.com/3016331/visualized/think-the-world-is-crowded- you-could-fit-the-entire-human-race-in-new-zealand#1 There is lots of room for people, so why do we speak of overpopulation?

Global population density

Where are the majority of people living? Would this be urban or rural environments? What physical geographic reasons draws people to these environments? What human geographic reasons draws people to these environments?

Global population density

Population distribution by night

Prep Read pages 128-129 in your textbook and answer the following questions (not all can be fully answered from text): 1. Why would some governments want to redistribute their populations away from large urbanized areas? 2. What disadvantages exist for redistributing populations more evenly across a nation? 3. As we talked about earlier, physical and human factors affect population distribution. Create a list in your textbook of all of the physical and human factors you can think of which would influence population distribution and density. 4. Consider population size, population density and population distribution. Write a short paragraph explaining the following: What issues could these cause over the next 35 years if they are not addressed. Be specific about the issues. Use the text under this link to help you think about it. http://www.fastcoexist.com/3016331/visualized/think-the-world-is-crowded- you-could-fit-the-entire-human-race-in-new-zealand#1http://www.fastcoexist.com/3016331/visualized/think-the-world-is-crowded- you-could-fit-the-entire-human-race-in-new-zealand#1
