Population Distribution & Density Global Geography 12

3 World Population Trends 1)The world population is continuously growing larger. 2)There is a growing gap between less developed countries (LDCs) and more developed countries (MDCs): - In 1900: MDCs had 560 million people (34% of the world’s total population) LDCs had 1.1 billion people (66% of the world’s total population) - In 1990: MDCs had 1.2 billion people (23% of the world’s total population) LDCs had 4.1 billion people (77% of the world’s total population) - In 2050: it’s estimated that over 84% of the world’s people will live in less developed countries. 3)Urbanization: the growing movement of people from rural to urban areas. - 1800: 5% of the world lived in urban areas - 1998: 50% of the world lived in urban areas - 2011: over 50% of the world lives in urban areas

Population Density The average number of people living in a particular unit of land; expressed as people per square kilometre (km2). The average number of people living in a particular unit of land; expressed as people per square kilometre (km2).

Arithmetic & Physiologic Population Density Arithmetic Population Density: This is technically the correct calculation though it may give an inaccurate impression. Ex. Population of Canada = 33 891 000 people = approx. 3.68 people/km2 Canada’s Land Area 9 220 970 km2 Population of Canada = 33 891 000 people = approx. 3.68 people/km2 Canada’s Land Area 9 220 970 km2 Physiologic Population Density: This shows a more accurate and meaningful density figure. It represents the number of people in a country relative to the area of cultivated land. Ex. Population of Canada = 33 891 000 people = approx.74.5 people/km2 Canada’s Cultivated Area 455 000 km2 Population of Canada = 33 891 000 people = approx.74.5 people/km2 Canada’s Cultivated Area 455 000 km2

Population Distribution The location of a population and how people are arranged on land. *Population distribution is closely linked to water, physical geography, and economic or political heartlands.

Brazil’s Arithmetic & Physiologic Population Density Brazil’s (2010): population: 193 364 000 population: 193 364 000 area is 8 511 965 km2 area is 8 511 965 km2 area of its cultivated land approx. 595 838 km2 area of its cultivated land approx. 595 838 km2

Activity

Population Distribution & Density: Activity (Global Geography 12) China has a land area of approximately 9 600 000 km2 and approximately 1 449 600 km2 of cultivated land. As of 2010 China had a population of approximately 1 354 148 000 people. China has a land area of approximately 9 600 000 km2 and approximately 1 449 600 km2 of cultivated land. As of 2010 China had a population of approximately 1 354 148 000 people. 1) Calculate China’s arithmetic population density and physiologic population density. Show your work. a) Arithmetic population density: b) Physiologic population density: 2) Why may it be useful to calculate the physiologic population density of a country rather than using the arithmetic population density? Explain.
