NRPA - Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT) formerly COA Accrediting Body for Higher Education in parks and recreation field Establishes competencies and standards that must be met for a higher ed program to be accredited Council is comprised of educators, practitioners and administrators appointed by sponsoring agency - NRPA

Part A: Organization and Operations Standards Non-curricular aspects of academic program Unit Characteristics, Mission, Philosophy, Goal and Planning, Administration, Faculty, Students, and Instructional Resources Example – Pg 156 – 4.05 Part B – Baccalaurate Degree Standards Foundation Understandings, Professional Competencies, and “the opportunity for the academic unit to offer options which are accredited”

Foundation Understandings – Institutions general education program and how the program/department fulfills those requirements Professional Competencies – conceptual foundations, profession, delivery systems, program and event planning, administration/management, legal aspects, field experiences 8.05 Understanding of environmental ethics and its relationship to leisure behavior

Fieldwork experience of 100 hrs May be completed anywhere Internship of no less than 400 hrs TR must be done in TR setting For Professional Accreditation must pass Part A and Part B May have an “option” accredited – TR is an option 28 additional standards – 6 fall under 7.00 series – Supportive coursework

Including 7.01 Anatomy and Physiology 7.02 Basic medical, psychiatric, and pharmacological terminology 7.03 Abnormal Psychology 7.04 Medical and disabling conditions, disorders, and impairments…pg 157 7.05 Wholistic Health and Wellness including disease prevention and health promotion 7.06 Use of self as an instrument in therapeutic relationships

Additionally 22 standards that apply directly to TR – example pg 157 – 9D.14 All must be met to receive accreditation in TR

Certifying body for individuals but has had a huge impact on curricula Students must be taught coursework required by NCTRC to become certified No standardized curriculum for TR - NCTRC has defined curricula for a “major in TR” or “major in recreation with emphasis in TR” 1981 NCTRC standards developed – 3 TR courses and 3 Recreation courses required

3 TR courses and 3 Recreation Courses Is this enough TR? Is it the place of the field placement site to train the student to pass the exam or to teach the student how to apply knowledge learned to actually practice?
