2 In this unit we are going to look at possible strategies to help you to produce innovative design work. Strategies for DESIGN INSPIRATION We are going to: analyse the shape of products. how proportion influences the appearance of products. look at style and styling of products.

4 What is meant by the term style? It can have a number of meanings for example: Being stylish Style movements Changing the appearance of a product with a look or style in mind. style and styling Minimalist Retro 60’s Art nouveauxOrganic Art & crafts Images courtesy – iconic interiors, bodieandfou, wheredidyoubuythat, design classics

5 Designers style their products to improve the visual appearance of the product. Designers often style their products to make them look different to similar products on the market. Task. Search the web and create a digital poster from images of similar products that have been styled in different ways. style and styling

6 These products do the same work – but look different. The designers have styled the outward/outline appearance of the kettles so that they appear different and distinctive to the other kettles on the market. Which product would you buy and why?

7 Retro styling Some designers favour retro styling.The products are styled on classic designs but use modern technology and developments. Chrysler PT Cruiser 2007 Chrysler 1940 style and styling

8 What do you think about the appearance of the computers below? The development of the Apple Mac – iMac computers by designer Jonathan Ive, clearly show the importance of styling a product to make an impact on the customer and therefore increase it’s market sales.

9 Has this product improved in appearance as a result of re-styling? style and styling

10 how will it look, will it be different or stand out from any other similar products on the market? what style will influence the look of your product? the outline shape of your product. An opportunity to reflect what has been discussed. When designing your product, you may like to think about:
