Discovery Corps First group sent out by Jefferson to explore the untamed frontier. Jefferson wanted Lewis and Clark to find the legendary Northwest Passage. Forty-three men traveled in the group and later were joined by the French trapper, Charbonneau and his wife Sacagewea. Sacagewea proved to be an excellent resource to the group because of her skills and knowledge. One of their most important contributions to America was the map they created of the land and waterways. They also sent back information about the plants.

Dunbar and Hunter Sent out to explore the southern territory. They were both Scotsmen and they led the “Grand Expedition” along the Ouachita River in Arkansas and northern Louisiana. They kept detailed records and came away with more scientific data than any other expedition. They studied the Hot Springs.

Freeman and Custis Sent out by Thomas Jefferson to find the source of the Red River. They collected plants and animal specimens and drew maps. They were stopped by a 100-mile-long log jam known as “The Great Raft.” The men were stopped by Spanish soldiers and were forced to turn back. They provided detailed journal entries about the beauties of Arkansas.
