3 THE ZIMMERMAN TELEGRAM March 1917 – US intelligence services intercept the “Zimmerman Telegram” Germany proposed that Mexico join the Central Powers, and potentially get Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico back Americans were outraged March 1917 – Germany sank 4 US merchant ships April 1917 – US declared war

6 ESPIONAGE & SEDITION ACTS 1917 & 1918 – Congress passed the Espionage Act and Sedition Act Thousands of people, mostly socialists and other radicals, were locked up for speaking against the war

7 RACE RIOTS African Americans moved to Northern cities to get jobs in war industries When white workers went on strike, bosses often used black workers to break the strikes 1917: Race Riots break out in St. Louis 1919: Race riot breaks out in Chicago

9 TREATY OF VERSAILLES - 1919 Allies dictated the treaty that ended the war Italy: Prime Minister Vittorio Orlando Britain: Prime Minister David Lloyd George France: President Georges Clemenceau US: President Woodrow Wilson The singled out Germany for punishment This will contribute to the start of World War II Wilson proposed a “League of Nations” to prevent future global conflicts

12 LEAGUE OF NATIONS Wilson’s plan called for an assembly of all nations, led by the US & European powers The League of Nations was part of the Versailles Treaty The Senate needed to approve the treaty in the US Republicans opposed the League, and wanted Wilson to make changes to it The Senate never ratified the treaty The US never joined the League of Nations
