Designing an Ethical Method Procedure Leedy and Ormrod. (2015). Practical Research: Planning and Design. (11th ed.). (102-107). Pearson. (2015 AP Research Workshop Handbook, 86-87)

Today’s Objectives: 1. Gain further knowledge regarding the ethical habits of researchers. 2. Revise any portions of your own research methodology that is questionable regarding ethical procedures

Ethical Issues in Research Protection from Harm Voluntary and Informed Participation Right to Privacy Honesty with Professional Colleagues Professional Code of Ethics Leedy and Ormrod. (2015). Practical Research: Planning and Design. (11th ed.). (102-107). Pearson.

Protection from Harm “Researchers should not expose research participants- whether they be human beings or nonhuman animals- to unnecessary physical or psychological harm.” Artifact needed: Waivers if there is ANYTHING physical or psychological Leedy and Ormrod. (2015). Practical Research: Planning and Design. (11th ed.). (102-103). Pearson.

Protection from Harm Items to consider: Allergies/health conditions that could be altered during research Pre-existing psychological conditions YOU MUST INFORM YOUR PARTICIPANTS OF ANY PHYSICAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES THAT COULD HAPPEN DURING YOUR RESEARCH. Leedy and Ormrod. (2015). Practical Research: Planning and Design. (11th ed.). (102-103). Pearson.

Voluntary and Informed Participation Informed Consent: “Participants must know the nature of the study and grant written permission.” Artifact: Informed Consent Form Form that “describes the nature of the research project as well as the nature of one’s participation” in the study. See page 104 in our textbook. Leedy and Ormrod. (2015). Practical Research: Planning and Design. (11th ed.). (103-105). Pearson.

Right to Privacy “Under no circumstances should a research report, either oral or written, be presented in such a way that other people become aware of how a particular participant has responded or behaved- unless, of course, the participant has specifically granted permission in writing for this to happen.” Leedy and Ormrod. (2015). Practical Research: Planning and Design. (11th ed.). (105). Pearson.

Honesty with Professional Colleagues “Researchers must report their findings in a complete and honest fashion, without misrepresenting what they have done or intentionally misleading others about the nature of their findings.” Leedy and Ormrod. (2015). Practical Research: Planning and Design. (11th ed.). (105). Pearson.

Professional Code of Ethics “Many disciplines have their own codes of ethical standards governing research that involves human subjects, and, when applicable, research involving animal subjects as well.” Leedy and Ormrod. (2015). Practical Research: Planning and Design. (11th ed.). (106-107). Pearson.

What do you have versus what do you need? Waiver for physical or psychological interactions Informed Consent Form Not just a consent form, but also a form to educate the participants about the research being conducted and their role in that research. IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH MINORS: Parents MUST sign an informed consent form BEFORE you interact with the student.

IRB Process at AHS Internal Review Board (IRB) Prior to collecting ANY data, you must be approved by our school’s IRB. If you collect data before the IRB, it will be considered void and cannot be used in your research. This is why your Literature Review and Methodology needed to be submitted by now.

Today’s Objectives: 1. Gain further knowledge regarding the ethical habits of researchers. 2. Revise any portions of your own research methodology that is questionable regarding ethical procedures.
