1 1 5 5 C H A P T E R Administration, Scoring, and Interpretation of Selected Tests

Chapter Outline  Measuring parameters of athletic performance  Statistical evaluation of test data

Parameters of Athletic Performance  Energy systems  Maximum muscular strength  Anaerobic power/ maximum muscular power  Anaerobic capacity  Local muscular endurance  Aerobic capacity  Agility  Speed  Flexibility  Body composition  Anthropometry

Selected Test Protocols: Anaerobic/Maximum Muscular Power Vertical Jump Starting positionMaximum height

Selected Test Protocols: Anaerobic Capacity 300-Yd Shuttle Run

Selected Test Protocols: Agility Edgren Side Step Test

Selected Test Protocols: Flexibility Starting position Final position Sit-and-Reach Test

Selected Test Protocols: Body Composition Skinfold Measurements (chest, thigh, abdomen) Chest skinfold Thigh skinfold Abdomen skinfold

Selected Test Protocols: Body Composition Skinfold Measurements (triceps, suprailium, midaxilla) Triceps skinfold Suprailium skinfold Midaxilla skinfold

Selected Test Protocols: Body Composition Skinfold Measurements (subscapula, calf) Subscapula skinfold Calf skinfold

Types of Statistics  Descriptive statistics (central tendency, variability, and percentile rank)  Inferential statistics

Normal Bell Curve

Developing an Athletic Profile  Select tests that measure the parameters most characteristic of the sport in question.  Choose valid and reliable tests to measure parameters, and arrange the testing battery to promote test reliability.  Administer the battery to as many athletes as possible.  Calculate percentile ranks to present a visual profile.  Evaluate the athlete based on percentile rank within the group and against the individual’s best performances over previous years.
