2 Chapter 6 Overview of the Writing Standards  Standards 1-3: occupy HALF of the CCSS for writing  Standards 4-10: illuminate HOW students should go about doing the work of the first 3 standards

3 CCSS- 3 types of writing  Narrative Writing: personal narrative, fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, memoir, biography, narrative nonfiction  Persuasive/Opinion/Argument Writing: persuasive letter, review, personal essay, literary essay, historical essay, petition, editorial, op-ed column  Informational & Functional/Procedural Writing: fact sheet, news article, feature article, blog, website, report, analytic memo, research report, nonfiction book, how-to book, directions, recipe, lab report

4 Where do we start? Chapter 7  Narrative Writing: Even though it is listed as the 3 rd standard, it is probably the best place to start because it is what we are most familiar with.

5 Writing Standard #3: The Narrative Standard Kindergarten:  narrate a single event  Provide a reaction to what happened

6 Writing Standard #3: The Narrative Standard 2 nd grade:  Write narratives in which they recount a well elaborated event or short sequence of events,  include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings,  use temporal words to signal event  order, and provide a sense of closure.

7 Writing Standard #3: The Narrative Standard 4 th grade:  Write narratives to develop…experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.  establishing a situation- introduce a narrator and/or characters  organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally  Use dialogue to show the responses of characters to situations  Use a variety of transitional words and phrases to manage the sequence of events  Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely  Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.

8 Writing Standard #3: The Narrative Standard 8 th grade:  Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well- structured event sequences.  establish a context and point of view: introduce a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.  Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.  Use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to convey sequence, signal shifts from one time frame or setting to another, and show the relationships among experiences and events.  Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to capture the action and convey experiences and events.  Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated experiences or events.

9 Writing Standard #3: The Narrative Standard Implementation:  Start the year by asking students to write their best on-demand narrative pieces.  Afterward, collect it and lay it alongside the continuum of narrative pieces- (12 levels of development)  Teach a unit of study on narrative writing  Repeat step 1  Honestly look at progression of each student- use as discussion across grade levels

11 Writing Workshop  ***Most important key for success is repeated practice combined with carefully calibrated feedback : in a workshop type of approach where students have the time, structure, and place to produce first drafts of writing, get feedback, and enter into a system of continuous improvement
