5. Henri Rouseau (1844-1910) Rousseau was a self-taught artist who worked as a customs official. He did not start to paint until he was in his forties, and is considered a primitive, or naive artist. His work does not really fit into any particular category. Art critics ridiculed the child-like look of his art, but many sophisticated artists, such as Picasso and Matisse, admired his paintings.
