© 2006 Global Grid Forum The information contained herein is subject to change without notice Leading the pervasive adoption of grid computing for research and industry GGF Community Objectives

2 Overall Community Objectives 1.Establish new, and grow & nurture existing international research and industry communities 2.Help end-users understand and use Grid technology 3.Identify, prioritize and drive requirements and use cases into the GGF standards process 4.Champion efforts to make GGF standards valuable for software suppliers & developers to adopt

3 Area Objectives for 2006 AREAOBJECTIVES (what/who/when) Research Apps (Satoshi Matsuoka and Thilo Kielmann) Support and represent the interests of Grid user communities in academia and research Provide content for GGF17 and GGF18 Accreditation of reviewed documents Co-location with academic conferences Industry Apps (Craig Lee and Bob Cohen) Provide content for GGF17 and GGF18 Telco and pharma VOC BoFs at GGF17, WG at GGF18 VAF BoF at GGF17, WG at GGF18 Use Case repository objective (???) Identify key industries and apps Grid Operations (Ken Klingenstein and Charlie Catlett) Develops user communities among operators and deploy-ers of grids. Communities exchange best practices and inform the standards process of operational requirements. Provide content for GGF17 and GGF18 GIN Objectives (???) Objective #3

4 Area Objectives for 2006 AREAOBJECTIVES (what/who/when) Technology Innovators (David DeRoure and Dennis Gannon) Bring the best ideas and experiences from the Grid research and development community to a forum where they can be exposed to, and attract the attention of, the technology and standards development community, major grid deployments, vendors and other researchers Provide content for GGF17 and GGF18 Gap analysis Objective #3 Major Grid Projects (Wolfgang Gentzsch, Victor Alesandrini, Alan Blatecky and Hai Jin) Bring together leading R&D and infrastructure Grid projects to exchange ideas, experiences, requirements, and best practices Provide content for GGF17 and GGF18 Identify and develop ways of collaboration among major grid projects (e.g. migrating to new software releases) Identify the major inter-grid requirements for standards and interoperability Convey these requirements back to GGF Standards groups in a timely fashion Establish a means for exchanging grid technology components

5 Area Objectives for 2006 AREAOBJECTIVES (what/who/when) Community Affairs (Geoffrey Fox) Focus on cross-cutting community activities Provide content for GGF17 and GGF18 Objective #2 Objective #3

6 BACKUP & REFERENCE

7 Success Metrics High member satisfaction (events and overall) Year/year growth of end user membership, event attendance and overall community High ratings on event content End-user success stories and references in terms of: –being helped in understanding and use of Grid technology, –value of participating in GGF overall –value delivered by Grid technology Growth in number and size of VOC groups Positive PR/AR on value of GGF to end-users and vendors Growth of VAF High VAF member satisfaction (events and overall) Vendor success stories and references (e.g. usability tests of OGSA)

8 Overall Community Deliverables Provide content for GGF events –Help attendees understand and use Grid technology Build Voice-of-the-Community (VOC) groups across key verticals –Establish interaction mechanism with Standards function to drive VOCs into the GGF standards process Establish Vendor Adoption Forum (VAF) to champion efforts to make GGF standards valuable for software suppliers & developers to adopt –Establish interaction mechanism with Standards function to drive VAF results into the GGF standards process

9 Objectives & Measures – Community 1. Establish and grow international research and industry communities o GGF and non-GGF events forums o Recruit/retain members o International regions o Recruit thought leaders and key orgs High member satisfaction (events and overall) Year/year growth of overall community Event content (GGF16, GGF17, GGF18, etc.) 2. Help end users understand and use Grid technology o Docs o Event content Year/year growth of end user membership and event attendance High end user member satisfaction (events and overall) End user success stories and references Event content (GGF16, GGF17, GGF18, etc.) 3. Identify, prioritize and drive requirements and use cases into the GGF standards process o Voice-of-the-Community (VOC) o Drive VOCs into standards process o Major Grid projects community o Development of prototypes VOCs for Finance, Pharma and Telcom Cadence with standards group to vet VOCs VOCs sessions at GGF16, GGF17 and GGF18 4. Champion efforts to make GGF standards valuable for software suppliers & developers to adopt o Economic factors of adoption o Suppliers/developers & open source GGF Vendor Adoption Forum established Year/year growth of vendor membership and event attendance High vendor member satisfaction (events and overall) Vendor success stories and references (e.g. usability tests of OGSA) Vendor sessions at GGF16, GGF17 and GGF18 Objectives Measures

11 Community F2F Jan’06 Results (pg 1 of 2) New Community Areas and rethinking existing Community Areas Socialize Vendor Adoption Forum Concept at GGF16 Socialize VOC to Telco-CG at GGF16 Vendor Adoption Forum BoF at GGF17 Vendor Adoption Forum 1st Meeting at GGF18 Establish GCAB by GGF17 Establish Standards/Community interaction team

12 Community F2F Jan’06 Results (pg 2 of 2) Accreditation of GGF documents Research gap analysis (what are the topics that we’re not covering) Co-locate with academic conferences Major Grid Project Directory Develop ways of collaboration among major grid projects (e.g., in the area of migrating to new software releases) Establish a means for exchanging grid technology components

13 The GGF Ecosystem End-User & Technology Communities Standards Groups Vendor, Developers, Open Source Communities Use Cases, Requirements and Prototypes Architectures and Specifications Interaction Flow of Tangibles Solutions and Building Blocks Create Value Deliver Value “MAKE STANDARDS RELEVANT” “MAKE STANDARDS COST EFFECTIVE TO APPLY” “MAKE END-USERS SUCCESSFUL”

14 Community Board of Advisors Potentially large, persistent group representing thought leadership and key participants in the community at-large Members would not necessarily hold official GGF positions (i.e. not necessarily GSFG members) Small time commitment since responsibilities would mainly be to review and suggest ideas to influence the community structure, operation, activities, etc. No formal meetings except possibly at major GGF events, i.e. interaction is primarily via e-mail Balance between academic/research, industry, vendor and end-user, nontraditional Grid

15 Overall Community Deliverables Provide content for both GGF and non-GGF events to help end-users understand and use Grid technology Provide content for both GGF and non-GGF events to help vendors understand GGF and GGF standards Recruit/retain Community members Establish international Community regions Recruit thought leaders and key orgs Build Voice-of-the-Community (VOC) groups across all key verticals Use VOC documents to identify, prioritize end-user requirements and use cases Establish close interaction with Standards Function to drive VOCs into the GGF standards process Make VOCs documents easily/readily available Establish Vendor Adoption Forum (VAF) to champion efforts to make GGF standards valuable for software suppliers & developers to adopt Use VAF to drive GGF standards adoption

16 Community Mission Build international communities to make Grid technology available to research and industry, then help them achieve high business value through the use of Grid technology
