3 Inactive Decision-Making Style A habit in which a person fails to make choices, and this failure determines the outcome. – Procrastinate – Little control over the direction their lives take – Difficulty gaining self- confidence

4 Reactive Decision-Making Style A habit in which a person allows others to make his/her decisions. – Easily influenced by what others think, do, or suggest. – Lack self confidence and have a great need to be liked by others. – Give control of the direction of their lives to others.

5 Proactive decision-making style A habit in which a person describes the situation that requires a decision, identifies and evaluates possible decisions, and makes a decision and takes responsibility for the consequences. – Are not driven by circumstances. – Are not influenced by peers. – Have principles, such as integrity, honesty, and dignity. To be empowered is to be energized. (has control over their decisions)

6 How to use The Responsible Decision Making Model 1.Promote Health 2.Protect safety 3.Follow laws 4.Show respect for self and others 5.Follow the guidelines of parents and other responsible adults 6.Demonstrate good character

7 Responsible Decision-Making Model Step 1: Describe the situation Step 2: List possible decisions you might make. Step 3: Share the list of possible decisions with a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult.

8 Decision-Making Step 4: Six questions to evaluate the consequences of each decision. – Will it promote health? – Will it protect safety? – Will it follow laws? – Will it show respect for myself and others? – Will it follow guidelines of my parents / other responsible adults? – Will it demonstrate good character?

9 Decision-Making Step 5: Decide which decision is most responsible and appropriate. Step 6: Act on your decision and evaluate the results.

10 What is a wrong decision? Harm health Are unsafe Are illegal Show disrespect for self and others Disregard the guidelines of parents and of other responsible adults Lack good character

11 Four step to take when you make a wrong decision Take responsibility and admit you made a wrong decision Do not continue actions based on wrong decisions Discuss wrong decision with parent, guardian, or responsible adult Make restitution for harm done to others
