1 Bell Ringer – 5/2/08 What social status did most Progressives have in the early 1900s? What was “Americanization”? Why did Native Americans form the Society of American Indians?

2 Corrupted Senators Around 1900, state Senators were often put into power by state machines Some U.S. Senators accepted bribes to vote the way corporations wished, instead of by the interest of constituents Reformers proclaimed “Give the government back to the people!”

3 Seventeenth Amendment Progressives proposed to change the method of electing U.S senators, so that political machines would have less influence The Constitution gave legislators the power to elect senators In 1913 the 17 th Amendment changed this – gave voters the power to elect their senators directly

4 Progressives Urged 3 other Reforms 1. Initiative – gives voters the power to initiate (introduce) legislation 2. Referendum – By using a petition, citizens can force legislature to place a recently passed law on ballot, so that voters have the opportunity to veto 3. Recall – enables voters to remove an elected official from office by calling a special election
