5 Topic One In what ways does the development of a child's physical and motor skills affect their social, emotional, and cognitive development? What impact would spina bifida or another physical impairment leaving a young child unable to walk have on that child’s social, emotional, or cognitive development?

6 Topic Two Growth and development depend on an intricate interplay among heredity and environmental influences (both nature and nurture). As an Early Childhood Professional, how can you provide an environment in which children can maximize their inherent potential?

7 7 Nutrition Establish regular eating schedules Avoid unscheduled snacks Provide healthy snacks Encourage hydration with water Allow children to help in planning meals Allow children to help in the kitchen Try to eat as a family

Make an effort to keep mealtime pleasant Include snacks as a part of the day’s eating plan Eat snacks and meals in a designated eating area (kitchen, dining room) Be a good role model with your own food decisions Avoid rewarding or punishing with food Allow kids enough time to eat Turn off the TV during mealtimes Serve a variety of foods for meals and snacks Eat food from each of the food groups each day

Offer new foods and food combinations Avoid forcing a child to eat Serve reasonable portions Read nutrition labels on packages Limit low nutrition foods like sweets and carbonates beverage Choose beverages wisely Include active play daily Remember! All children will eat when hungry.
