2. Amendment 1 – 5 freedoms A. Freedom of speech, religion, press, petition, assembly 1. your freedoms cannot harm another person’s rights or freedoms a. Ex. Libel (writing lies about someone) b. Ex. Slander (saying lies about someone) 2. your freedoms cannot endanger the gov’t a. Ex: treason 3. Freedom of religion a. Wall of separation – separation between church (religion) and state (gov’t) b. Establishment clause – Congress is not allowed to establish (endorse) any religion

3. Amendment 2 – the right to bear arms Amendment 3 – you have the right to deny military housing ( they can not take your home) Amendment 4 – you are protected from unreasonable search and seizure

4. Amendment 5 – rights of people accused of a crime A. due process – fair and equal treatment B. protected from self-incrimination (do not have to say anything that may make you look guilty) C. protected from double jeopardy (can not be tried twice for same crime) D. eminent domain – the gov’t CAN take you private property for public use as long as you are compensated

5. Amendment 6 – you have the right to a (1) fair and speedy trial, (2) the right to know charges, (3) trial by jury, and (4) the right to a lawyer (legal counsel) Amendment 7 – civil case – if you sue for more than $20 you have the right to a jury trial

6. Amendment 8 – you are protected from (1) cruel and unusual punishment and (2) excessive bails and fines (punishment must fit the crime) Amendment 9 – rights reserved for citizens Amendment 10 –reserved powers for states (anything not written in the Constitution is reserved for states)
