2. Simple Sentences A simple sentence, also called a main (independent) clause, contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought. In the following simple sentences, subjects are in purple, and verbs are in green. – 1. Some students like to study in the morning. – 2. Juan and Arturo play football every afternoon. – 3. Alicia goes to the library and studies everyday. Note that sentence 2 contains a compound subject, and sentence 3 contains a compound verb. Simple sentences, therefore, contain a subject and verb and express a complete thought, but they can also contain compound subjects or verbs.

3. Compound Sentences A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions are always preceded by a comma. In the following compound sentences, subjects are in purple, verbs are in green, and the coordinating conjunctions and the commas that precede them are in blue. – I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English. – Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping. – Jane likes Pizza Hut, but George prefers Papa John’s.

4. Practice! Tell if the sentence is simple or compound. Put a star above the subject and circle the predicate (or verb). 1. The polio vaccine was developed by Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin. 2. My little brother Jake got a toy in his breakfast cereal. 3. We watched the baseball game, and we went for ice cream afterward. 4. A red car pulled up to the house, and a girl climbed out. 5.Once of the remotes controlled the stereo, and another controlled the television.

Strategize: to plan the actions you will take to complete a task. p. 55 Scoring Guide Describe an incident from an interviewee’s college experience that influenced his or her coming of age. Incorporate vivid examples from the three descriptive categories (appearance, actions, and speech). Present an interviewee’s unique point of view by conveying his or her distinct character. Follow a logical organizational structure for the genre by orienting the reader, using transitions, and maintaining a consistent point of view. Use descriptive language, telling details, and vivid imagery to convey a strong sense of the interviewee’s voice. Embed direct and indirect quotations smoothly. Demonstrate correct spelling and excellent command of standard English conventions.

6. Parallel Structure (Parallelism) Gerund: A gerund is a noun made from a verb by adding "- ing." The gerund form of the verb "read" is "reading." You can use a gerund as the subject, the complement, or the object of a sentence. – Reading helps you learn English. SUBJECT OF SENTENCE – Her favorite hobby is reading. COMPLEMENT OF SENTENCE – I enjoy reading. OBJECT OF SENTENCE Prepositional phrase: introduced by a preposition (words that indicate location) and usually acts as an adjective or a verb. – The book on the left is the one to read if you are working on the report assigned in class.

7. Check Your Understanding 1. Mary likes hiking, to swim, and to ride a bicycle. 2. The teacher said that he was a good student because he took good notes, he studied for tests early, and his labs were completed carefully. 3. The coach told the players that they should get a lot of sleep, that they should not eat too much, and to do some warm-up exercises before the game. 4. The dictionary can be used for these purposes: to find word meanings, pronunciations, correct spellings, and looking up irregular verbs.
