Catalyst – January 8 2 -40, 2012 Put your Oil Spill Summary on your desk please. Put signed Safety Contracts in folder. 1. Write a good definition for hypothesis. 2. What are the two sections that you need to have when writing a good procedure for a scientific experiment?

Today’s Agenda  Catalyst  Regroup with Ms. Stroh  Oil Spill Lab Intro  Lab and Work Time  Progress Reports  Exit Question HW: FINISH LAB REPORT AND STUDY FOR QUIZ TOMORROW!

Today’s Objectives  SWBAT simulate an oil spill clean up in lab.  SWBAT determine the most effective method for cleaning up an oil spill.  Extra Credit: Explain why the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was so difficult to clean.

Clean-Up Methods  Mechanical Methods  Containment (Boom and Sand Berms)  Skimming (Scooping)  Sorbents (Sponges)  Chemical Methods  Burning (Oil is flammable, water is not)  Dispersants (Chemicals)  Biological Agents (Fertilizers to promote growth of organisms that break down oil)

Oil Spill Timeline  April 20, 2010: Coast Guard responds to explosion; search for 11 missing people begins  April 29, 2010: Department of Homeland Security declared the event a Spill of National Significance  May 27, 2010: Moratorium on all oil drilling  June 1, 2010: Justice Department began civil and criminal investigations  January 2011: BP’s Ken Feinberg meets with residents and business owners of the Gulf Coast to discuss compensation

Lab!  Read ALL directions BEFORE beginning lab  Fill in “Materials” and “Safety Methods” sections BEFORE beginning lab  Work together in an efficient manner  Answer Lab Questions throughout lab  Clean up when done  Answer Conclusion Questions  If you don’t finish in class, complete for HW

Lab Review  Difficult to mechanically separate oil from water  As you saw in lab  We also use chemicals (“dispersants”) and bacteria to break up and degrade the oil  May not be effective depending on type of oil, length of time since spill  Chemicals that only break up the oil don’t actually get rid of it… they just spread it out As you saw in lab

Exit Question 1. What is one thing you learned from this lab? 2. What is one future experiment you could do to learn more about the topic of oil spills. HW: FINISH all of Lab if needed and Study for Quiz 1.1 Tomorrow!
