Catalyst “The Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill (aka the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill) flowed unabated for three months in 2010, and may be continuing to leak. It is the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the oil industry.” 1. What does the word “unabated” mean in the sentence? How do you know? 2. What do you know about the Gulf Oil Spill? Try to come up with at least three facts. 3. Convert 3 grams to kilograms 4. Convert 10 grams to ounces 5. Convert 7 ounces to mL

“THE GLORY IS NOT IN NEVER FAILING, BUT IN RISING EVERY TIME YOU FALL” Oil Spill Lab: Set-Up

Objective and EQ Objective: SWBAT explain the process of scientific inquiry and apply this thinking to solve a real-world problem. EQ: How can we apply the scientific method to clean up a real-life Oil Spill? What are the expectations for Essential Lab Reports?

The Gulf Oil Spill Background Information: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/05/01/u s/20100501-oil-spill-tracker.html http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/05/01/u s/20100501-oil-spill-tracker.html Scientists have come up with many strategies to help combat the spill. These attempts all rely on the scientific method!

Gulf Oil Spill Cleanup Problem: How can we best clean up the oil protect the environment? Hypothesis: If we use a plug, then we can keep the oil from harming the environment, because the oil won’t be able to keep leaking out. Experiment: Try it. Record Data.Data Analysis: Did it work? Conclusion: Using a plug was not very effective. We need to try something else.

What else did scientists try?

We Do Another example: Shontae put a water bottle filled with water into the freezer and left it overnight. The next morning, she discovered a crack in the bottle. Design an experiment to investigate why this happened. Identify the following:  Scientific Question  Possible Hypothesis  Experiment:  Independent Variable  Dependent Variable  2 Constants, Control

We Do Another example: Ed watered his grass with salt water. When he woke up the next day, he saw that all of his grass was dead. Design an experiment to investigate why this happened. Identify the following:  Scientific Question  Possible Hypothesis  Experiment:  Independent Variable  Dependent Variable  2 Constants, Control

We Do Another example: Two groups of rats were used for an experiment. Group A was kept in a cage that had a running wheel. Group B was kept in a cage with nothing in it. The rats in Group A did better on memory tests (like running through a maze) than the rats in Group B. Identify the following: Independent Variable Dependent Variable 2 Constants, Control

Lab Notebooks! How to Set-Up Your Lab Notebook:  Tape or Staple Table of Contents to Inside Front Cover.  Tape or Staple Lab Rubric to Back Cover  Tape or Staple Experimental Diagram to Second-to-Last Page  Tape or Staple _________ What I must see for every lab:  Title  Date  Group Members and Roles  Everything on the Lab Rubric

Oil Spill Lab Step 1: In groups, review the Lab Sheet. Read background info and summarize main points in your lab notebook (see lab handout for page layout). Step 2: Formulate a Scientific Question/Problem Statement. This must have an IV and DV. Record in your lab book. Step 3: Review Materials List. Brainstorm Possible Solutions. Step 4: Decide on a procedure/course of action. Make sure to decide on a control. Step 5: Formulate your hypothesis in If…Then…Because format. Step 6: List your procedures. Be as specific as possible.

Recap Questions What role does science play in solving real-world problems? How does the scientific method relate to efforts to clean up the Gulf Oil Spill? What are some solutions we came up with? Extension Question: Do you think scientists deserve acclaim for their efforts? Why or why not?

Home Learning If you did not finish either the Problem Statement, Hypothesis, or Procedures section, complete this for homework. Revise your procedures as necessary. You must have a way to measure how well your technique worked! WRITE DOWN (due next class period) 1. Convert 52 L to mL 2. Convert 3 tsp to mL 3. Convert 600 mg to g 4. Convert.6 g to kg 5. HONORS - Convert.85 kg to mg (this requires two steps!)
