2 Hector Dimano Age: 15 Lives: Horsley Park, Sydney, NSW. Religion : Catholic Heritage: Italian Family Pattern: Hector was adopted when he was 2 years old after his single biological mother could not provide for him anymore. He has an adopted Father, Sam, an adopted Mother, Lucy and they’re biological son and daughter, Anthony (22) and Natalie (20). Socio-economic status: Both of Hector’s parents work full time jobs, and Hector has also been working an afterschool job for the past year. Schooling: Hector is currently in Year 10 at Highschool, also, through a school program for “School leavers”, Hector also studies one day at TAFE per week to become a mechanic. Interests: Hector plays for “Rangers” soccer club, and trains 2 times per week, with one game on the weekend.

3 As Hector is a member of the Catholic Church, he falls in the 27% of Australians who also identify with this religion, its customs, beliefs, values and practices.

4 In Hectors suburb of Horsley part, he falls in the 3 rd highest age group bracket with 266 (14.7%) people aged between 15 – 24 years in Horsley Park Compared to the whole of Australia, Hector falls in the 2 nd highest age bracket, with 2,704,276 of 17, 151, 012 (13.6%) of Australians aged between 15 – 24 years.

5 In Horsley Park, Hectors family type is the most common in the area, with 62% of families in this area being a couple with children. In Australia, Hectors family type is once again the most common, with 45.3% of families in Australia being a couple with children.

6 Microsystem: Microsystem refers to Hector’s Immediate environments, such as his family, school, friendship group, sporting team and neighbourhood. Parts of Hector’s microsystem would include his Father, his Mother, his older Brother and his younger Sister. Also, his school teachers and TAFE teachers are included in his microsystem, along with his immediate friendship group. Finally, along with his school friendship group, Hector also has made friends from his soccer team and neighbours.

8 Mesosystem: refers to the layer which provides the connections between the different parts and structures of the individuals microsystem. Hectors mesosystem would include his parents involvement with both his highschool and TAFE teachers, through interviews and school meeting and activities, between his parents and his soccer coach, at both coaching and games. Also there are connections between his school friendship group and his sporting friendship group, where Hector has introduced both groups to one another at things such as birthday parties.

11 Exosystem: The exosystem is the layer in which the child has no direct function in, but it still effects the childs wellbeing and development, and both positive and negative effects are felt on the childs microsystem through the exosystem. The exosystem of Hectors Ecological Map would include both his parents work schedules, as they both work full time. Also, the changing times of soccer games and training would also have an effect on Hector. Hectors worklife and changing shift times in the workplace also effect on his microsystem, as does the changing times of his friends and girlfriends worktimes. Also, the “Catholic Calendar” would also effect Hector, as this determines certain days and times where Hectors normal day to day activities are dramatically changed, and his behaviours are altered.

13 Macrosystem: The macrosystem is the outerlayer which is made up of certain cultural customs, activities, values and beliefs. This layer has an effect on each of the other 3 layers due to issues such as Religion, Government and Cultural issues and beliefs being raised in this layer. Hectors Macrosystem would be effected by things such as the state of the Australian Government, where the current financial crisis and job crisis are effecting many Australian families, and also Hector as an individual as he plans to join the workforce full time. Also, Hectors Catholic upbringing and religious issues and beliefs would have a great effect on Hectors Ecological Map. Finally, as a teenager of 15 years of age, issues raised in the media on subjects such as body image, likes and dislikes and outlooks and values on issues such as sex, drugs and alcohol and attitudes towards women, especially on a 15 year old boy, would have a large impact on all the layers of Hectors model.
