7 PUBERTY DEFINITIONS: o A period of time when males and females become physically able to reproduce o Process of physical changes by which a child's body becomes an adult body capable of reproduction

8 WHEN DOES PUBERTY OCCUR? o Occurs as a result of the release of hormones o What is a hormone? o Male Hormone: Testosterone o Female Hormone: Estrogen o Usually occurs between the ages of: o 8 and 13 for girls o 10 and 15 for boys

9 WHAT IS MENSTRUATION? o Shedding of the uterine lining o 28 day cycle controlled by hormones

10 MENSTRUATION o Also know as “period” o Begins in girls ages 9-16 o Indicates the body’s ability to get pregnant

11 PUBERTY: Physical Changes o Primary Sex Characteristics o Directly related to the production of gametes o Males: Sperm o Females: Ovum o Secondary Sex Characteristics o Body hair o Development of breast in the female o Muscle development in males

13 PUBERTY: Emotional Changes o Change in hormones affect mood o Understanding and coping with stress o Difficulty in expressing feelings

19 ABSTINENCE Definition: o The conscious decision to avoid harmful behaviors, including sexual activity before marriage, and the use of tobacco, and other drugs. o The only 100% effective way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STI’s)

21 MAKING THE CHOICE FOR ABSTINENCE o It takes planning, preparation, and self control. o Few Steps to Follow: o Establish your priorities in life o Set Personal limits o Share/Discuss your feelings and concerns with a trusted adult o Steer clear of high-pressure situations o If you are currently sexually active, re-evaluate

22 USING REFUSAL SKILLS o Communicate your decision clearly o Can be verbal and nonverbal o Discuss the matter o Discussion makes self control (a person’s ability to use responsibility to override emotions) easier. o If someone persists, become more assertive!

23 CONSEQUENCES OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY o These consequences include: o Unplanned Pregnancy o Sexually Transmitted Infections o Loss of Self Respect o Negative effects on social relationships o Family Disapproval

25 DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS o Forming mature relationships with people your age and of both genders o Being able to cope with success and failure o Achieving a Masculine and Feminine social role o Accepting one’s physique

26 DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS o Achieving emotional independence from parents and other adults o Preparing for marriage, family life, and career o Acquiring a set of personal standards as a guide to behavior o Developing conceptual and problem-solving skills
