1 DETECTOR COOLING PROJECT Preliminary Plan for WP#1 P. Petagna – June 17 th 2009

2 PROPOSED WORKPLAN: 1 - Applicable methods for leak detection and finding (Definition / Standardization) 1.1 Pressure drop 1.2 Sniffers 1.3 Endoscopes 1.4 “Exotics”? (e.g http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090223115327.htmhttp://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090223115327.htm or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R0EHe9iYQw )http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R0EHe9iYQw 2 - From “Leak Rate” to “Fluid Loss” ( Definition / Standardization) 2.1 Systematic analysis and classification of existing literature on the subject 2.2 Design of a test bench and execution of ad-hoc tests on calibrated leaks on particular configurations of interest 3 - Understanding “in situ leak repair” 3.1 Applicability of “standard” repairs to “accessible leaks” (i.e. outside detector) 3.2 Prosecution of the RAL analysis of existing methodologies of “inaccessible” leak repair 3.3 Deep understanding of chemical implications of the different techniques (fluid compatibility, radiation hardness, process control, risk of clogging, needs for subsequent cleaning…) 4 - Tests 4.1 Construction of a test bench (real-scale mock-up of typical non accessible circuits) and execution of ad- hoc tests on calibrated leaks for the technique(s) possibly selected. WP1 –On-site leak search and repair

3 BEST GUESS SCHEDULE: 1 - Applicable methods for leak detection and finding (Definition / Standardization) Mainly collecting and organizing information, plus competing the existing one: up to September (except for potential “exotic” techniques) 2 - From “Leak Rate” to “Fluid Loss” ( Definition / Standardization) Literature analysis to be completed but a lot of information already collected The preparation of a test bench can start in late-August in PH/DT, 2-3 months for systematic execution of tests 3 - Understanding “in situ leak repair” Waiting for documentation from Jason Tarrant (promised for this week): difficult to plan without it. 4 - Tests Probably meaningful start beginning of 2010. WP1 –On-site leak search and repair

4 RESOURCES: 1 Technician available from PH/DT as from end-August Part-time activity for “Eng-Staff 2” in PH/DT + P. Petagna Help and support from “gas” section agreed If needed, injection of some time from one PH/DT fellow Collaboration with TE and Napoli (+ RAL if still available) WEAKNESS: Unknown decision of M. Tavlet about his future position WP1 –On-site leak search and repair
