ILIAS Physics in deep underground laboratories JRA1 : Low background techniques WP4 : Radiopurity of materials Pía Loaiza Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, France ILIAS meeting, September 2004, Edinburg Presentation of WP4 : Radiopurity of materials

WP4 - ILIAS meeting, Sept. 2004, Edinburgh WP4 : R&D on radiopurity of materials and purification techniques Objectives : Collect existing information on radioactive contamination of materials typically used in the construction of detectors. Implementation of a database containing collected data as well as new measurements. Development and test of purification techniques to improve radiopurity. Already planned : underground facility for electroforming copper at LSC. Radon purification system at LSM. Collect data on cosmogenic activation and perform new measurements. Development of MC codes to analyze the cosmogenic activation of different materials. Deliverables : First test version of data base Other objectives : Systematic comparison of measurements in different labs Compilation of all Ge sensitivity (WP1)

WP4 - ILIAS meeting, Sept. 2004, Edinburgh http://www-lsm.in2p3.fr/ilias/ilias.htmlhttp://www-lsm.in2p3.fr Information on WP4 Database on radiopurity of materials Welcome to the database on radiopurity of materials This page provides acces to radionuclide concentration in materials commonly used in low background experimental set-ups. The measurements have been performed by groups involved in experiments requiring ultra low background environments. While this data is an useful guide for material selection, the radionuclide concentration may vary depending on the lot. Therefore, it is necesary to control all used materials when building low background set-ups Database search

WP4 - ILIAS meeting, Sept. 2004, Edinburgh Proposed data to be included in the database And to state clearly how the errors were obtained Construction materials: For components, such as resistors, connectors, etc the same data given in dpm/item MaterialType Provider and Ref Radionuclide concentration in dpm/kg 238 U series 232 Th series 234 Th 214 Pb 214 Bi 228 Ac 212 Pb 208 Tl 235 U 210 Pb 137 Cs 40 K 60 Co 57 Co 54 Mn CooperOFHCVA 0010563 < 0.3<0.12<0.3<0.20.03 ± 0.01 0.001 ± 0.0009 It is important to give as much information as posible to identify the material Measured by EDELWEISS Type of detector Ge, type n, 200 cc @ LSM

WP4 - ILIAS meeting, Sept. 2004, Edinburgh We need: Contact person(s) in each laboratory. Existing bibliography on measurements of radioactive contamination in materials Data including information detailed in previous slide (plus more information proposed?) (exchange format ?)
