4 Topic For example: Pennsylvania History A unit topic could be titled Coal Mining in Pennsylvania

5 Goal & Objectives Describes what learners should accomplish The goal would be Students will develop an understanding of the economic impact of coal mining in Pennsylvania The objectives could be… Students will be able to explain the types of coal found in Pennsylvania Students will be able to list the cities noted for their coal production. Etc….

6 Content Outline Specifies the material to be covered in as much detail as possible For example in the coal unit... The difference between anthracite and bituminous coal. How the coal is mined—tunnels/strip mining Child labor in the mines Molly McGuires and the development of unions Mine safety The Pennsylvania cities known for their coal mining. The effect of closing the mines on the economy of the area Etc,,,,,

7 Learning Activities The activities for the unit Introductory Developmental Culminating Arranged in a series of daily lesson plans

8 Resources and Materials All the materials and resources needed to teach the unit Books Technology (Internet, web, web 2.0 tools, etc..) Video Guest Speakers Field Trip (physical/virtual)

9 Evaluation(Assessment) How will you assess how well a student is learning (formative) and has learned (summative) Formative– questions you ask & students ask during class; assignments along the way Summative – independent practice, projects, an activity at the end, or paper/pencil test

10 Accommodations Plans for students with specific needs.. ELL, Hearing Impaired, etc.. How you will differentiate the classroom to meet the needs of the low achievers as well as challenge the high achievers.

11 Reflection Here is where your professional growth takes place. You evaluate what you taught, how you taught it and ask yourself what you would change when you teach it again.

12 Types of Instructional Units –Thematic unit Based around a topic such as “Apples”, Oceans” etc… –Interdisciplinary Combines disciplines
