Bell Work!!! Describe some things that could make you uncomfortable doing physical activity. Describe some things that could make you excited about physical activity.

Assessing My Physical Activity and Exercise.

A topic closely related to nutrition and healthy eating is being physically active and physically fit. Physical inactivity and an unhealthy diet combined kill about 300,000 people each year. Only tobacco use kills more people.

Let’s create a list of different activities you can do throughout the day to be physically active or to exercise.

Physical Activity and Exercise include: Walking to and from school. Taking the stairs. Biking. Doing chores. Dancing. Strength training. Washing the car by hand. Running or jogging. Swimming. Stretching.

Just as there are guide lines for Healthy Eating, there are also Guidelines for Physical Activity and Exercise.

Guidelines for Physical Activity and Exercise Teens should be physically active for at least 60 minutes each day. This can include play, games, work, or recreation. As part of their activity, teens should exercise moderately to vigorously for at least 30 minutes 3 or more times per week. This level of exercise helps you grow stronger, move faster, be more flexible, and helps build your endurance.

The list you created has a mix of both physical activity and exercise. Let’s decide which of these activities are physical activity and which are exercise.

Guidelines for Physical Activity and Exercise Teens should be physically active for at least 60 minutes each day. This can include play, games, work, or recreation. This level of exercise helps you grow stronger, move faster, be more flexible, and helps build your endurance.

An activity is exercise only when it is moderately vigorous and lasts for at least 30 minutes without stopping.

How can you include more physical activity in your day to meet the guideline?

You can: Walk or bike to school instead of getting a ride. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk the dog. Walk to a friend’s house. Do extra chores. Limit television and computer use.

Turn to “Assessing My Physical Activity and Exercise” With a partner, read the Guidelines again and fill out your sheet.
