1 Monday, September 23rd Entry Task Schedule: Earth System Notes
Earth system has four main parts that interact. Identify the parts involved in the following scenarios: (write down the scenario and list parts interacting) Wind blows a sailboat across a lake A bear digs under a log to search for food People wear a path through a forest, and rain further erodes the path Schedule: Earth System Notes 1.1 RSG 1.1 Quiz Objective I can understand and learn more about the spheres that make up Earth’s system Homework: Organize Notebook Please have on desk: Earth System Foldable 1.1 Questions

2 The Earth System System: an organized group of parts that work together to form a whole. The Earth system has four major parts: Atmosphere Hydrosphere Biosphere Geosphere

3 Atmosphere The mixture of gases and particles that surrounds and protects the surface of Earth. The mixture of gases: Nitrogen (78%) Oxygen (21%) Carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other gases (1%)

4 Hydrosphere Made up of all the water on Earth:
Oceans, lakes, and glaciers Rivers, streams, and underground Water covers 75% of the Earth’s surface 3% is fresh water 70% in glaciers and polar ice

5 Biosphere All life on Earth: in the air on the land in the waters

6 Geosphere All the features on Earth’s surface: Continents Islands
Sea floor Everything below the surface

7 The Earth’s Geosphere crust: thin, rocky shell that includes continents and sea floor mantle: thick layer of hot rock outer core: molten metal, mostly iron inner core: solid metal, mostly iron

8 The Earth System The atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere work together to form one large system called Earth. geosphere biosphere atmosphere hydrosphere

9 Tuesday, September 24th Entry Task Compare your answers to your 1.1 RSG with your partner. If there are any differences, have a discussion as to why. Schedule: 1.1 Quiz Minerals Introduction Objective I can be assessed on the Earth System and how the different parts interact with each other I can understand an introduction to Minerals Homework: Finish anything not completed in class Please have on desk: 1.1 RSG

10 To Do Read pages 2-5 including the “Scientific American Frontiers” red box Do not need to read the unit projects on pg 5 Answer the 1st question in the “unanswered questions” box Do this in your notebook Use full Sentences, IQIA

11 Wednesday, September 25th
Entry Task Lets see what you already know about minerals. Decide if the following statements are true or false. If they are true write them out as is. If they are false write out a correct statement. Water and ice are minerals Minerals can be found in rocks Minerals exist as gas, liquid, and solid. Schedule: Chapter 2-Minerals Introduction Objective I can understand that minerals are basic building blocks of Earth Homework: Finish Anything not done in class (2.1 reading and questions)

12 4 Characteristics of all Minerals

13 To Do Read 2.1 with your partner and as your read fill out the 4 characteristics of minerals As you read answer the “check your reading questions” and “reading visuals” questions Write the answers to the questions in your notebook using full sentences, IQIA There are 3 “check your reading” questions There are 2 “Reading visuals” Questions

14 Thursday, September 26th Entry Task Schedule: 2.1 RSG and questions
Answer the following questions using full sentences, IQIA. What are the four characteristics of a mineral? On what basis do scientists classify minerals? What two mineral groups are most common in Earth’s crust? Schedule: 2.1 RSG and questions 2.1 Vocabulary Objective: I can understand the 4 characteristics of minerals and can explain the two minerals that make up Earth’s crust I can understand vocabulary terms associated with minerals Homework Study for 2.1 quiz tomorrow Please have on desk: 2.1 “check your reading” questions

15 To do today 2.1 RSG 2.1 Review Questions 2.1 Vocabulary Words: Words
