3 By the end of this lesson… ALL OF US will be able to identify reasons why a source is/n’t useful and reliable based on it’s content. (4C-4B) EVEN BETTER IF you can identify two reasons why a source is/n’t useful and reliable using your own knowledge. (4A-5B) EXCELLENT IF you can explain two reasons why a source is/n’t reliable with reference to your own knowledge. (5A-6C) EXCELLENT IF you can explain two reasons why a source is/n’t reliable. (5A-6C) CHALLENGE!!! CAN YOU USE OUR OWN KNOWLEDGE TO EXPLAIN REASONS WHY A SOURCE IS/N’T USEFUL. (6B-7C) CHALLENGE!!! CAN YOU EXPLAIN THREE REASONS WHY A SOURCE IS/N’T RELIABLE. (6B-6A) CHALLENGE 2!!! CAN YOU ALSO EXPLAIN WHAT SPECIFICALLY THE SOURCE DOES NOT TELL YOU ABOUT THIS TOPIC? (7B-7A) CHALLENGE 3!!!! CAN YOU REACH A JUDGEMENT ABOUT THE RELATIVE USEFULNESS/RELIABILITY OF A SOURCE? 4 Today we will be focusing on: utility and reliability

5 Source A – Britain led the way in some areas, producing new technology that helped change the world. Medical care, education and transportation were all developed with help from the British Empire. Once these were developed, many people within the Empire benefited from them. Extract taken from the national archives ‘British Empire Overview’ To share findings and educate. This makes the source more reliable because it is presenting findings rather than persuading us of a bias personal opinion. The review is done by a member of the national archives team. This will be a historian trained in research with access to a large amount of information making the source reliable. An overview of the materials in the national archives. This increases the reliability as it is well informed and unbiased. Although the date is not given we can assume that it is a secondary source which has the ‘benefit of hindsight. It has access to a large volume of information and can evaluate the long term impact of the British Empire. The audience are people who visit the national archives. These people tend to be students of history and professional historians. This is a very reliable source because…

6 15 minutes With your partner assess what each source suggests about the empire and how reliable it is.
