1 Wolfpack Debate 2012 0f Mice and Men

2 Debate Rules Respect classmates, their arguments, opinions, and experiences. Raise your hand if it is not your turn to speak. Act and speak in a professional way. Follow the debate procedures Any team who: Is not respectful Interrupts without raising hands Does not follow rules Puts classmates down Will have one point deducted from their final score for each offense.

3 Debate Basics: If your team is assigned to argue “AGAINST” something, you are trying to prove the statement or question wrong. If your team is assigned to argue “FOR” something, you are arguing in favor of the question or statement. You are taking the role of someone who agrees and is trying to get everyone else to agree too. “REBUTTAL” means “comeback”, or the argument that is used to counter the other team’s statements.

4 Scoring Miss Graning will moderate the debate. Mrs. Goidosik will score the arguments. She will be looking for: Clear, focused arguments. Relevant arguments. Arguments that effectively address the rebuttal. Supporting evidence from the text. Each team can receive a maximum of 6pts. Per debate topic.

8 Remember, this is a competition! You will have ten minutes to formulate your arguments with your team. Everyone must participate. Chose one person to be the spokes person for your opening, and one for your rebuttal. First, write an opening statement telling us why your team’s view is correct. Cite at least 1 example from the text. Next, write your rebuttal. (Think about what the other team will say and how you will prove them wrong.) In your rebuttal, you must have: at least 1 example from the text with a page number that supports your argument. At least 1 real world connection that supports your argument.
