STUDY HALL SITTING IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEATS WORKING ON HANDOUT QUIETLY NOT TALKING

WRITTEN RESPONSE APRIL 25 Scientists refer to everything in the universe as being composed of matter. What is matter and give 3 examples of matter and 3 examples of non – matter. Be sure to brainstorm first and then construct your sentences.

Written Response – April 25

TODAY’S AGENDA – EOG REVIEW Review Matter: atoms, molecules, elements, and the 3 states of matter, expansion and contraction (including how thermometers work) Then Station Activities! Quiz Monday, April 28 th = biomes and plant adaptations

Complete guided notes….. Matter = all of the objects and living things in the universe (examples) Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space Matter is made of particles too small to see known as atoms

Is Air Matter??? Balloon Activity? Complete worksheet

What is Matter! Introduction to Matter : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYFAj50c 7xM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYFAj50c 7xM

Mass – what is it? Mass = the amount of matter in an object (Mass is similar to weight but not the same, if you could count the number of atoms in something, then that is its mass)

Volume - what is it? Volume = the amount of space something takes up or occupies

Atoms and Molecules Video on atoms and molecules Source: BRAIN POP http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandch emistry/atoms/

Atoms Atoms = smallest building blocks of matter; Matter is made of particles too small to see called atoms 100,000,000,000 atoms on top of this pin!

Molecules Molecules: the smallest unit of a substance that has 2 or more atoms bonded (put) together

Molecules Molecules can be the same type of atoms bonded together (O 2 molecule = air we breathe) (O 3 molecule = ozone) Molecules can be different types of atoms bonded together (H 2 O = water molecule)

Elements Elements = identical atoms that can not be broken down further, a pure substance Periodic Table = more than 100 different elements!

Elements Atoms of the same element = same properties All iron (Fe) atoms have the same mass and occupy the same amount of space Atoms of different elements = different properties All iron(Fe) atoms are different than all carbon (C) atoms

States of Matter SOLIDS LIQUIDS GASES

states of matter Brain Pop Video – States of Matter

Solids has a definite volume and shape Atoms are packed Close together. Atoms do vibrate a Little, but we Cannot see it. Add heat solid can become a liquid!!! Check it out!!!!!

Atoms in a Solid The atoms are vibrating only slightly Particles are packed together tightly

Liquids has a definite Volume, but not A definite shape Particles touch, but Are able to move Around Take the shape of Their container. Add heat liquid can become a gas!!! Check this out now!!!!

Atoms in a Liquid Atoms touch but are able to move around more Heat has been added to change states from a solid to a liquid

Gases Has no definite Volume or definite shape If not contained, Gases will spread Out indefinitely. If contained they Take the shape of Their container. ComparingAll Three!!!

Atoms in a Gas Atoms do not touch and move rapidly If not contained, the gas spreads out indefinitely

Increased temperature means greater energy, so most substances expand (get bigger) when heated. Decreased temperature means less energy, so most substances contract (get smaller) when heated. Most substances can exist as a solid, liquid, and gas depending on temperature.

Station 1 Marshmallow Activity – SOLID, LIQUIDS, AND GASES

Station 2 How does a thermometer work???

Station 3 Elements and Molecules Activity

Station 4: Brain Pop Video Video on “Matter Changing States” Video Worksheet

Bill Nye, the science guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnXV7Ph3 WPk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnXV7Ph3 WPk

Atom’s Family Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D- iPPwDAk1Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D- iPPwDAk1Q

Atoms in our Room! Volunteers Come Up! Solid Liquid Gas ComparingAll Three!!!
