2 FETS meeting, 14th February 2007 Peter Savage The Front End Test Stand Collaboration 2 FETS main support stands Deciding now is going to be a best guess and there will never be a perfect solution given the range of size of components that make up the FETS. Rail system does not need to be specified now. Decisions: Rail pitch - Wide enough to provide useful space between rails for items such as vacuum pumps. Not so wide that working on the FETS is uncomfortable and that the structure is weak. Rail height – that defines beam height to some degree. Tall enough to provide useful space beneath rails. Suggest use of false floor in any case to run power and pipes so no need for concern re. beam height relative to a person. Length of each section and how many sections (6 x 2m) – spare bench offline? Some other length stands to provide flexibility? Misc - Bolted to the floor + wheels for when unloaded?

Leg pitch too narrow to span trench Rail pitch too narrow for our FETS needs No room beneath rails to mount equipment No possibility of sliding equipment along the stand. Lack of convenient mounting points for services. Do we need detachable top structure?

6 FETS meeting, 14th February 2007 Peter Savage The Front End Test Stand Collaboration 6 Conclusion If we can decide on the main parameters for the support stands soon then engineering drawings for manufacture can be produced in the near future. Getting the stands built and aligned in place in R8 will not only give us the base upon which equipment can be mounted, but will define the boundaries that equipment must fall within and will hence aid the design process.
