MICE Collaboration Meeting at Frascati, Jun 26~29, 2005 PID Support Design Stephanie Yang

S Yang, 26-Jun-20052 Why a common support structure for the PID equipments: There is very little space along the beam line direction for the accommodation of the PID equipments; As a result, they need to be packed quite closely to each other. These “lollipop” looks like are unstable and unsafe to work with; It was agreed that the TOF2, the Cherenkov 2 and the EmCalorimeter are to be mounted on a common support structure. The common support maximises the space utilisation and provides a reliable and safe working environment

S Yang, 26-Jun-20053 The existing support provision for the PID equipment

S Yang, 26-Jun-20054 Iron Shield suspended off the tracker solenoid cryostat The revised PID support structure TOF 2 Cherenkov 2 EMCalorimeter PID support can slide in and out of normal anchor position in both X & Z directions X Y Z

S Yang, 26-Jun-20055 Elevation view of the support structure End view of the support structure The PID support Structure

S Yang, 26-Jun-20056 Cherenkov Connection details at the PID seating locations

S Yang, 26-Jun-20057 Support details at the Cherenkov 2 Support is via two 125 x 125 x 10 C-Channels bolted on existing Cherenkov outer frame Shim pack to adjust the final height

S Yang, 26-Jun-20058 Support arrangement for the TOF2 Seating plate is via a 10mm thick plate welded to the end of the C-channel TOF support legs: 50 x 50 x 4mm thick C- channel

S Yang, 26-Jun-20059 Support channels bolted to the TOF 2 outer frame

S Yang, 26-Jun-200510 CKOV2 drawing received from Ghislain in Feb,2005 TOF2 drawing received from Maurizio in Feb, 2005

S Yang, 26-Jun-200511

S Yang, 26-Jun-200512 Similar support arrangement for the EMCalorimeter EmC drawing received from Ludovico on 15 th Jun,2005.

S Yang, 26-Jun-200513 How strong is this structure? The structure is made up of a series of C-channel and L - beams; The main load bearing beams are 75 x 75 mm wide with 6 mm thick; The heaviest component (the Cherenkov) weighs about 1 to 1.5 tonnes and sits on the mid span of the main support beam. A quick calculation, using twice the load and a conservative support condition (load at mid-span) showed an acceptable stress (131 MPa compared with an allowable of over 240 MPa) and deflection of 0.4mm;

S Yang, 26-Jun-200514 What next? The design was done based on support being able to move in and out of the normal operation position by rail. Features associating with this will be worked out once the railing design is complete There may be access requirements that we are not aware of; We now need to go through the design with the PID group leaders to see if there is any particular need they wish to see on the structure; We believe the design is fit for its purpose.
