INCIDENTEFFECT ON ESTHER Skiing with Buddy – p. 96 and 97 Date with Marco – p. 106, 109-110 After date with Marco p. 111 - Esther feels excitement at the thought of possibly ending her life in a skiing accident. This is one of the first major instances of suicidal thoughts/depression in the book. - Esther knows Marco is not a good person but continues to spend the night with him, possibly to try and live dangerously. - Esther considers allowing the rape to occur before fighting back. - Esther does not report the attempted rape nor does she tell anyone – therefore she keeps this pain bottled up -ridding herself of her unhappy experience at her supposed “dream job.” -Exhibits lack of common sense that she will need clothes for the following day.

4. INCIDENTEFFECT ON ESTHER Marco’s Blood – p. 112-113 Mrs. Greenwood’s Bad News – p. 114 Esther’s Return Home -Lack of common sense exhibited again when she does not understand why people are staring at her curiously -does not want blood to flake, possibly showing that she wears it as a symbol of honor. Not something a rape/attempted rape victim would normally do. -Esther is devastated that she didn’t make the writing course, which takes a toll on her emotions. -Claims she expected it showing that she is pessimistic and does not expect good things to happen to her. -Despite Esther’s disdain for NYC, she kept busy there. Now back in the suburbs, she is isolated. -Esther exhibits textbook signs of depression by not getting dressed and having insomnia.

5. INCIDENTEFFECT ON ESTHER Esther’s Voice – p. 118 (continues throughout chapter 10) -Esther’s voice is now unrecognizable to her. It is a hollow, zombie-like voice. -She is completely disconnected from this voice inside of her showing that, as a whole, she feels completely disconnected from everything, including herself. Is Esther’s decline a result of her creating troubles in her mind or is it a result of a continuous series of bad luck?
