2 FRANKENSTEIN REVIEW LETTERS 1-4 Robert Walton is writing his sister, Margaret Saville, telling of his adventures on the sea. He is lonely, desperately wanting friendship and hopes to find that with his shipmates. The crew see a large man-like figure on a sledge going across the frozen sea, they are confused because while it looks like a man, it is huge and fast! The crew then stumble upon Victor Frankenstein, weak and almost dead. Robert nurses him back to life and enjoys all he has to say about life. Victor Frankenstein starts to tell Robert his story LETTERS END

3 CHAPTER 1-3 Victor tells of his childhood and his upbringing LOVES EVERYTHING SCIENCE-Reads old books (Agrippa, Magnus, Paracelsus) He is from a loving family Witnesses a most violent and terrible thunderstorm-lightening Mother dies of scarlet fever given to her by Elizabeth Introduces Henry Clerval- childhood friend He introduces Elizabeth Lavenza Adopted girl into his family He claims that she is his He loves her deeply and she loves him as well

4 CHAPTER 1-3 cont. At age 17, Victor goes off to college at the University of Inglostadt. He is told (M. Krempe) that he knows nothing of modern science and has wasted his time reading M. Walman explains that the modern scientists have promised very little, but with Victor Frankenstein’s backup knowledge and lust for exploration, he has infinite possibilities. Victor is sold!

5 CHAPTER 4 From that day forward, natural philosophy and chemistry became his sole occupation. He works vigorously on creating a “man”. He isolates himself from his friends and family. HE IS ALIVE! “the monster” Victor hates his creation-it’s hideous, grotesque

6 CHAPTERS 5-6 Henry nurses Victor Frankenstein back to health No sign of “the monster” Receives letters from Elizabeth

7 CHAPTER 7 Receives letter from father explaining that his brother, William is dead. Murdered in the woods-strangled Victor Frankenstein travels home-witnesses “the monster” in the woods where William was murdered. Justine Moritz is accused-picture found (she is innocent)

8 CHAPTER 8 Trail begins for Justine, she is found guilty and killed

9 CHAPTER 9-10 Family is in mourning over two loved ones. “Nothing is more painful to the human mind, than, after the feelings have been worked up by a quick succession of events, the dead calmness of inaction and certainty which follows, and deprives the soul both of hope and fear.” Victor Frankenstein wanders for days eventually coming upon “the monster” “the monster” wants to tell his side of the story, explain his hurt
