The appearance of “the stranger” (as you will later read in the book, is Victor Frankenstein) leads to the unfolding of the entire story of the creation of a monster that Frankenstein is about. Victor Frankenstein, as the creator of said monster, is the protagonist. His early appearance leads to our understanding of his personality traits from Robert Walton’s point of view which will influence the further reading of the novel for us.

With his appearance, Walton’s need of a courageous friend, to share his thoughts and feelings, is fulfilled, since Walton wanted a friend to share his passion and ambition in exploring the Pole with. After Frankenstein recovers from his dreadful state, he and Walton gradually becomes closer – the finding a brother delights Walton. He finds Frankenstein “gentle, yet so wise; his mind is so cultivated and when he speaks, although his words are culled with the choicest art, yet they flow with rapidity and unparalleled eloquence.” (pg.27)
