2 1. Energy- The ability to do work. 2. DNA- Genetic information within cells. (Deoxyribonucleic acid) 3. Reproduction- Transmitting genes to offspring for survival. 4. Cellular Respiration- The process by which cells take in oxygen and sugar to produce energy. 5. Photosynthesis- The Process by which plants convert light into glucose.

3 6. Hypothesis-A testable statement that relies on information gathered from observation and inference. 7.Independent Variable-A variable in an experiment that the scientist deliberately changes (manipulated variable). 8.Inference- Uses prior knowledge to figure something out or develop a hypothesis. 9.Observation- The first step to carrying out scientific processes. Involves using at least one of the five senses. 10.Biology- The study of life.

4 11.Qualitative Data- Data drawn from observations made from the five senses. 12. Experimental Group- A group or subject in an experiment that is tested by measuring responses to variables. 13.Science- A systematic way to examine the natural world. 14.Dependent Variable- Variable in an experiment that scientists observe for change or reaction (responding variable). 15.Control Group- Group or subject in an experiment in which all variables are kept the same so others are measured against it.

5 16. Theory- A well supported explanation that is based on repeated experimentation, but not proven. 17.Quantitative Data- Data drawn from measurements, often expressed in numbers. 18.Cell- The basic building block of life. 19.Adaptation- A beneficial trait that increases the organism’s chance of survival. 20.Homeostasis- Maintaining a stable internal environment.
