http://indico.cern.ch/event/373053/ Survey activities during LS1 Dominique Missiaen On behalf of the SU section

Agenda D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU2 A brief overview of all the activities done for the LS1and some results The strategy of SU during the LS1 Infrastructure support Issues What went well and what could be done better Resources Conclusions

SU activities D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU3 In 2013 Injectors : PSB, PSR, TT2/FT16, SPS, TI2 LHC Fast levelling Smoothing of the LSS Alignment of the 18 exchanged cryo-magnets Low beta quads monitoring system : maintenance

SU activities D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU4 In 2014- beginning 2015 Injectors : end of PSR and TI8, scans of PSR and PSB, SPS north area (6 lines completely measured and 2 realigned) LHC Alignment of the new/replaced components (collimators, Roman pots, BPMxx,..) Smoothing of the ARCS below 80k Low beta quads monitoring system : installation of the validation systems

SU activities D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU5 Experiments LHC experiments : Survey infrastructure (upgrade of all geodetic networks and link to LHC geometry) Measurements during opening, maintenance and closure of the 4 LHC big detectors Installation of new detectors and related infrastructures Replacement of beam pipes Development and installation of monitoring systems (ATLAS ADEPO, LHCb IT Monitoring) Non LHC experiments NA62 installation, COMPASS Drell Yan, CAST, HIE-ISOLDE…

Strategy D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU6 Estimation of the quantity of work gave us the number of needed staff Max 14 people from the SU contract 3 are based permanently at CERN and were trained since 2011 The 11 others arrived a couple of weeks before the start of LS1 and trained by the permanent ones 2 PJAS were paid by BE/EN and PH The experiments collaborations provided (as usual) support from several institutes 1 Temporary labour for mechanical installation ComplexCERN staff Extra staff needed LHC2.2 2.5 5 (C201) SPS25 (C201) PS13 (C201) Experiments61 (C201) 2 PJAS(Krakow) 2 (Atlas-DUBNA) 2 (CMS- wisconsin &Debrecen) 1 (LHCb -Gatchina) 1 (Alice) Maintenance low beta quads 31S107 Estimation of 2011

Access/Impact D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU7 IMPACT No major problem but it is time consuming Sometime difficult to cope with the changing planning of the experiments : time to get the impact approved (2 days for ATLAS) ALICE and CMS -> Global IMPACT except for some areas MAD : Lost of time because are too sensitive Access sometimes difficult because of lifts breakdown and maintenance LHC Sectors patrolled too early => a lot of time lost in transport

ECRs/Layout database D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU8 Availability of data in the Layout DB Perfect for the LHC For the SPS, will be OK at the end of LS1. A bit late ! ECRs some equipment installed in the triplets areas without any ECR

Safety D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU9 Radiation : WDP LHC LSS7 : very good help from the RP team PSR, PSB : a bit heavy for the first time but useful for the future SPS (BA1, extraction areas, north area…) : avoidable unexpected events and circumstances were leading to higher doses than expected in the WDP Protection barriers/fences Some of them were NOT dismantled even if the work was finished for several weeks (TI2, TI8 and LHC)

Coordination/Planning D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU10 Despite the coordination efforts, some coactivities were Very important in the LSS (time slots not respected by some others) Heavy for the ARCS : cohabitation with ELQA, HC, CSCM Shift work, a lot of time lost in transport Alignment of new components : at the end of ls1, the planning was tight, the pressure was enormous, the planning was changing almost every day Low beta quads planning was not so clear

Coordination/Planning (Experiments) D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU11 Permanent co-activities in the experimental caverns Independant plannings for the 4 LHC experiments Frequent changes in the plannings, even at the last minute (SU must be flexible) in particular CMS due to very tight schedule Work charge not always smoothly distributed (peaks of dense activity) Unexpected tasks due to experiment technical constraints SU is in permanent contact with the Technical Coordination of each experiment (crucial)

Issues D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU12 Ventilation problems which pertubates measurements Good reactivity of the CV team but in some cases the air current was still too important Adjustment/alignment systems to be improved for some equipments (collimators, roman pots) Degradation of some very fragile SU equipment in LHC Alert systems Low beta monitoring systems

Issues D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU13 Each time we go in the tunnels we discover new obstacles : In the LHC new equipments installed in the reserved survey area (LHCb exp, BGV, etc) Some cables too close to fiducials «Cryo footbridges» In the PS Some line of sights are not accessible any more, they have to be re-established The action is already on going to solve it

Issues D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU14 Responsability to be clearly re-defined in the triplets regions between SU and MSC concerning the supporting system (notches, etc) The fixation of the Q2s on the floor using strings

What worked well ? D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU15 All the work foreseen was done and even more Due to the very good quality, flexibility and involvment of people Due to the training, procedures and tooling which were tested before Due to the detailed knowledge and prior acquired experience of the experimental areas by SU staff and collaboration support New instrumentation and software improvements : gain in time and precision, well adapted to experiment environment especially for ALARA rules

What could be improved ? D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU16 For the arcs components smoothing : Could we measured during warm up and not during cool down ? Less coactivity ? Coud we measured at warm and not at cold ? A test should be done to validate this For experiments More accurate planning would help in some cases or particular periods More modern/automatic instrumentation

Ressources D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU17 15.5 CERN staff/23.5 non staff (4.5/10 for experiments) Availability of experimental collaboration staff is mandatory All the non CERN staff has gone away 5 LD and 2 are retiring before LS2 ComplexCERN staff Non CERN staffcomments Accelerators811 C2011 staff spent a lof of time in planning mgt => 1 staff missing for office work Experiments4.53 C201 2 PJAS Krakow 2 Atlas - DUBNA 2 CMS - Wisconsin & Debrecen 1 Alice – Gatchina 0.2 LHCb Maintenance low beta quads+ alerts 32 FSU 0.3 PJAS Krakow 1 staff missing for field work Total15.5 (5LD) 23.5

Conclusions D. Missiaen EN-MEF-SU18 whatI - keepII - improveIII - change Safety : radiation WDP : very useful for future intervention The design of equipment in order to reduce the dose taken for a whole intervention and not team by team Access conditions Globally OKReduce IMPACT approval delay (ATLAS) MAD are a bit too sensitive Support received Coordination for the exchange of magnets in SPS Infrastructure Layout database availability for LHC Layout database to be up to date for SPS Planning/coordin ation Strong collaboration with the Technical Coordination of Experiments and with the LS1 coordination Planning in the caverns Planning dedicated for the triplets areas ? The coactivities were too important during the LHC LSS and Arcs smoothing Organisation of the SU works New instrument to save time in the Experimental caverns Survey reserved space have to be integrated and respected
