LS1 : EL Upgrades & Consolidation Chamonix– February 8 th 2012 F. Duval on behalf of EN/EL The goal of LS1 is to implement everything needed for a safe and a reliable operation of LHC @ 7 TeV/beam The goal of LS1 is to implement everything needed for a safe and a reliable operation of LHC @ 7 TeV/beam

LS1 : EL Upgrade & Consolidation Three different types of activities are planned  The consolidation of the electrical infrastructure  The maintenance of the accelerator infrastructure  A large amount of requests from equipment groups F. Duval - Chamonix 20122 Priority Priority 2 Priority 1 & Priority 2 but also Priority 3 & 4 Reliable Operation of LHC Operation of LHC @ 7 TeV February 8, 2012

Consolidation of electrical infrastructure It is part of a consolidation program which spans over 15 years aiming at substantially increasing the reliability and the availability of the power distribution network. F. Duval - Chamonix 20123 It develops around the following three themes: 1.Replace ageing equipment 2.Embed redundancy, secured network, robust failure cause elimination 3.Prepare for future needs ReplacementSPS Power cables, LHC UPSs, BA5 substation ConstructionElectrical substation for the CCC rack room Consolidation66 kV protection, 66 kV substation in Meyrin UpgradeSCADA system February 8, 2012 Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups

Consolidation of electrical infrastruct ure February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 20124 Example C1 : SPS Power Cables Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups  Power cables 3.3/18/66 kV, control cables and optical fibres  90 km in 7 km long trenches  Tubes buried in 2011  Cables pulled in 2012  Cables connected and commissioned during LS1  Cost: 17 MCHF  6 FTE

Consolidation of electrical infrastruct ure February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 20125 Example C1 : SPS Power Cables Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups WHY:  SPS 18 kV network is made of 40 years old cables  Cable screen section has to be increased in order to carry higher currents  Many faulty joints during the past years.  Moisture detected in the screen layer during last repair operations

Consolidation of electrical infrastruct ure February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 20126 Example C1 : SPS Power Cables Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups

Consolidation of electrical infrastruct ure February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 20127 Example C2 : BE91 Substation Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups 3.3 kV Diesel power station New building 791 900 m2 substation in Prevessin  6.5 MCHF  8 FTE  Infrastructure delivered end 2012  Commissioning during LS1 (2013) Partners: EL, CV, Civil Engineering, HSE

Consolidation of electrical infrastruct ure February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 20128 Example C2 : BE91 Substation Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups WHY:  Increase 18 kV Prévessin distribution  Creation of a secured power station for the SPS and Prévessin  Construction of a new LV substation to ensure full redundant infrastructure (EL + CV) for the CCC

Maintenance of the accelerator infrastructure In addition to the usual periodic maintenance operations and those delayed until LS1, we will address particular and labour intensive activities. These include: the replacement for irradiated cables the replacement of water cooled cable hoses in 3 LHC sectors the cleaning of unused cables in the most crowded areas e.g. SPS-Point 5 the replacement of non radiation-resistant fibres F. Duval - Chamonix 20129February 8, 2012 Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups

Maintenance of the accelerator infrastructure February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 201210 Example M1 : Replacement of WCC hoses in 3 LHC sectors Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups Risk of “leakage” due to hoses not conforming to the technical specifications (presence of chlorine and cracks)  Hose of WCC to be replaced in 3 LHC points (4 right, 6 and 8)  Length: 3120 m.  Commissioning and tests.  2 MCHF  3FTE  All LS1 UA83

Maintenance of the accelerator infrastructure February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 201211 Example M2 : Cleaning of unused cables in SPS point 5 Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups New cabling installations are becoming impossible in several areas  Cleaning list of unused cables with the help of users’ groups  Identify unused cables on site  Disconnect unused cables  Remove unused cables  3.2 MCHF  3FTE  2013

Maintenance of the accelerator infrastructure February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 201212 Example M2 : Cleaning of unused cables in SPS point 5 Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups

Requests from equipment groups A large amount of user requests have already been made filling almost 100% of our capacity during LS1. But based on the last shutdown, we estimate that only 50% of the requests for LS1 are currently known. Some examples: R2E; relocation of EL equipment and recabling in 2 LHC points. PS Access system (PSS), RF upgrade project in SPS BA3. Linac4 and Transfer line to Linac2 The BE/BI upgrade projects, HIE Isolde, Elena, Video SPS, RF fire brigade, GSM-BTS, DAQ system for CMS and LHCb, ATLAS & ALICE consolidation, Cryo upgrade, etc. F. Duval - Chamonix 201213February 8, 2012 Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups

Requests from equipment groups February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 201214 Example R1 : relocation of EL equipment and recabling in 4 LHC points. Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups See M Brugger’s presentation  6 EL sections involved  EL Budget: 5,5 MCHF  8FTE  2013/2014

Requests from equipment groups February 8, 2012F. Duval - Chamonix 201215 Example R2 : PSS new PS Access system. Consolidation Maintenance Equipment groups GS/ASE project (P. Ninin)  3,2 MCHF  Cables & Fibres  3.5 FTE  2012/2013 19 65 138 90 135 203 128 21 23 27 64 91 TT2/TT2 L4 L2/LEIR/SWY/PSR CTF AD/NTO F 37 ISL/TT70 PUITS Génie civil Echelles Proposition de répartition des câbles sur le site

Strategy Because EN/EL will have a huge program of work during LS1, all our projects have been organised so that 1.they can start during the technical stops in 2012 and 2.ideally, only those activities which must take place during a full shutdown are carried out during LS1. Therefore the EL program for the shutdown has commenced early (January 2012) and will be completed later (2015). EN/EL has already started to increase its engineering and technical resources so that newcomers (New contractors as well) will have at least a minimum period of time for training and integration. F. Duval - Chamonix 201216February 8, 2012

… in summary huge load A huge load on EL resources substantial increase of resources A substantial increase of resources to cope with the work which has reached the limit of the supervision capacity of the EL staff not yet known Probably all the needs of the equipment groups are not yet known tough rules of the priority The tough rules of the priority will be applied and some requests will have to wait F. Duval - Chamonix 201217February 8, 2012
