1. Welcome to Third Grade with Miss Walter A Balanced Literacy Classroom

2. Welcome to my Balanced Literacy Classroom! This presentation will provide you with more detailed information about how I plan to teach reading and writing with your child this school year.

3. My Balanced Program is made up of: A reading component A writing component

4. The Reading Component includes: Read aloud Shared reading Guided reading Independent reading

5. Read Aloud This is where I will share literature selections with your child. Parents are encouraged to come into the classroom to be “guest readers.”

6. Shared Reading This is where I will involve the whole class in the reading process at the same time. This will be done by reading poems, singing songs as well as a variety of other genres.

7. Guided Reading Teacher works with students individually or in small groups. Student reads book at their own instructional level. All students do not necessarily work on the same skills. Students advance to more difficult book selections at their own rate.

8. During Guided Reading… I will work with small groups or individual students at the reading table. Students not at the reading table will be involved in literacy centers around the classroom.

9. Independent Reading Your child will be encouraged to reading during: Literacy centers Free time

10. The Writing Components Shared Writing Interactive Writing Writing Workshop Journaling

11. Shared Writing This is an activity that will occur at the carpet area. I will write down words that the children dictate to me. This is an opportunity to model story writing.

12. Interactive Writing This type of writing will take place at the carpet area. As the children develop more confidence in writing, I invite them to share the pen with me.

13. Writing Workshop/Guided Writing This takes the same format at guided reading. I will work with small groups of students with their writing skills.

14. Guided Writing and Workshop Rules Use quiet voices Stay on task Ask writing buddy for help Use classroom to spell unknown words.

15. Journaling Your child will have the opportunity to write in several journals: Morning Journals Dialogue Journals

16. Journals.. The morning journal will be used a personal journal and I will provide prompts for your child to write about as well as free choice where they choose their own topic.

17. Dialogue Journals Will be used to encourage written conversations between students and students and the teacher.

18. Reader Response This year we will respond to literature through.. Art activities Poetry writing Retellings Journaling Cooking!
