BOYLE’S LAW

What effect does increasing the pressure have on the volume of gas?

Draw the effect of increasing the pressure on a gas Increasing the pressure 

Molar Volume of Gas the volume occupied by one mole at the specified temperature and pressure.

STP Standard temperature & pressure temperature = 0 o C or 273K volume = 22.4L / mole pressure = 1.00 atm or 101.3kPa *you have to know these constants!*

SATP Standard ambient temperature and pressure temperature = 25 o C or 298K volume = 24.8 L / mole pressure = 100kPa

Boyle’s Law P 1 V 1 = P 2 V 2

Boyle’s Law As the pressure on a gas increases, the volume of the gas decreases proportionally, provided that the temperature and chemical amount of gas remains constant

The volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure of the gas (at the same temp and amount)

Example A 2.0L party balloon at 98kPa is taken to the top of a mountain where the pressure is 75kPa. Assume that the temperature and chemical amount of the gas remain the same. Use Boyle’s Law to determine the new volume of the balloon.

P1V1 = P2V2 List the givens What are we looking for?

Manipulate the equation Plug the numbers in and solve

HMMM… HOW IS BREATHING A DEMONSTRATION OF BOYLE’S LAW?
