3  Worked as an editor for the school newspaper and won third place in state for UIL feature writing.  Got in trouble for publishing an underground newspaper that made fun of the school, especially the losing football team. (“The football team later egged my car”)

4  He is certified in both English and history, and taught for fourteen years in both public and private schools, at middle and high school levels.  Rick Riordan now writes full-time. He lives in San Antonio with his wife and two sons.

5  Rick Riordan is the multi-award-winning author of the Tres Navarre mystery series for adults and the New York Times bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians series for children.

6  The Percy Jackson series features a twelve-year-old dyslexic boy who discovers he is the modern-day son of a Greek god.  The novels draw on Riordan’s experience teaching Greek mythology and his interaction with students who have learning differences.

7  The Lightning Thief was a New York Times Notable Book for 2005 and has been made into feature film by Twentieth Century Fox. Theatrical Release: Friday, February 12, 2010

8 I made this author study on Rick Riordan. We will read The Lightning Thief after TAKS. The students will enjoy knowing that he is a local author. Introducing the author allows students to know that some of the characters are based on his life.
