1 IEEE 802.21 MEDIA INDEPENDENT HANDOVER DCN: 21-08-0057-00-0000 Title: Figures of MIH reference model for 802.11 and 802.16 Date Submitted: Jan, 2008 Presented at IEEE 802.21 Ad hoc meeting Feb 27-29 at Santa Clara Authors or Source(s): H Anthony Chan Abstract: Updates to figures showing MIH reference model for 802.11 and 802.16 (This is analogous to Figure-1 Update based on discussions with Tony Jeffree)

3 MIH reference model for 802.11 In Figure 7 MIH reference model for IEEE 802.11 in P802.21d9.0, changes are proposed for following reasons: The MIHF block need not touch the PHY layer block. It only has interfaces to LLC, MAC, and MSGCF, but not PHY The interface between MIHF and MSGCF is not too straightforward to see from the current figure, especially when the MIHF block is not touching the MSGCF block The interface between MIHF and MAC is also not too straightforward to see from the figure. Correct the acronym to MSGCF to be consistent with that used in P802.11u

4 MIH reference model for 802.11 existing Figure 7 in P802.21d9.0

5 MIH reference model for 802.11 The new figure 7 (next slide) is an attempt to improve the existing Figure 7. In this figure MIHF is shown adjacent to MAC, LLC, L3, and MSGCF to each of which it interfaces through a SAP. It shows MAC_SAP between MAC and LLC as well as between MAC and MIH. It shows LSAP between LLC and L3 as well as between LLC and MIH.

7 MIH reference model for 802.16 In Figure 8 MIH reference model for IEEE 802.16 in P802.21d9.0, changes are proposed for following reasons: The dotted line in the current figure runs between CS_SAP and MIH_SAP. It is not too straightforward to understand this as showing CS_SAP between CS and MIHF, especially when the MIHF block is not touching the CS block.

9 MIH reference model for 802.16 The new Figure 8 in the next slide is an attempt to improve the existing Figure 8. It is showing MIHF adjacent to mobility entity, CS, and L3MP, to each of which it interfaces through a SAP. It shows CS_SAP between CS and L3 as well as between CS and MIH.
