4 The Teachers Confucianism Founded by Confucious Men are good by nature Filial Piety-Respect your elders Writings: The Analects Rulers should act virtuous and set an example for the people Education will improve society 5 Key Relationships – Father to Son – Elder Brother to Younger Brother – Husband to Wife – Ruler to Subject – Friend to Friend

5 The Politicians Legalism Laws should be strict and punishments should be harsh Hanfeizi and Li Si Men are evil by nature Autocracy- Ruler has all authority All books were burned, so no writings exist Shi Huangdi instituted Legalism as Chinese Emperor Started Great Wall of China which served as a blockade from enemy empires

The Han Dynasty Followed the Qin Dynasty (and Shi Huangdi) The Many Advancements of the Han Dynasty: Created civil-service specialized workers for the government Invented paper (105 AD) Invented many tools that made farming quicker and easier Began the Silk Road, which was a major trading road that spread goods, culture, religion and ideas all over the world (Extended from China to Africa and Europe) Notable Leaders: Liu Bang (Ruled 202-195 BCE) and Wudi (Ruled 141-86 BCE)

7 The Social Butterflies Hinduism Founded by the Aryans Strict social class system called the Caste System (Brahmins - the priests - were at the top of the caste system, while the Untouchables were at the bottom) Believe in reincarnation and reaching enlightenment, or moksha. You should have a good karma. Began in India, and is still one of it's main religions today Religious Texts: The Vedas and the Upanishads

8 The Monks Buddhism Founded by Siddhartha Gautama, who became Buddha, the enlightened one, after meditating under a tree for 49 days Believe in reincarnation and reaching enlightenment, or Nirvana Began in India, but then spread all across Asia The Buddha had 4 Noble Truths: 1.All life experiences suffering 2.The cause of suffering is desire 3.To end suffering, you must end desire 4.The way to overcome desire is to follow the Eight-fold Path

9 The Monks Buddhism (continued) The Eightfold Path: 1.Right Views 2.Right Motive 3.Right Speech 4.Right Action 5.Right Livelihood 6.Right Effort 7.Right Mindfulness 8.Right Contemplation

10 The Warriors The Persians One of the largest empires in history Had many technological advances Main Religion: Zoroastrianism Cyrus the Great was an accepting leader (He allowed the Jews to return to their homeland) Constructed the Royal Road, which made trade and travel much quicker and easier 3 Major Leaders: –Cyrus the Great, Political and military genius Practiced religious tolerance Considered one of the best leaders of the Persian Empire –Cambyses Ruler after Cyrus, but did not share his views Conquered Egypt As a result of being an unfavorable leader, he was killed by his own people –Darius I Not related to previous Kings. Expanded the Persian Empire and strengthened the military force. Created an efficient government using Satraps
