Adverb Clauses An adverb clause is a dependent clause that modifies, or describes, the verb in the independent clause of a complex sentence. Just like adverbs, adverb clauses tell how, when, where, why, or under what condition.

The milk in the refrigerator stinks because it is out of date. The adverb clause in red describes why the milk stinks.
