3  Genghis Khan – leader who united the Mongols; conquered vast territory (means “strong leader”)  Kublai Khan – grandson of Genghis Khan; founded Yuan Dynasty & ruled at height of power  Marco Polo – traveler from Venice, Italy; went on fact-finding trips for Kublai Khan; Wrote book about travels to China – inspired European interest in Asian goods / spices

4  Zhu Yuanzhang – rebel leader who drove out the Mongols & founded Ming Dynasty  Yong Le – emperor of China; son of Hong Wu (Zhu Yuanzhang)  Zheng He – Chinese Muslim & court official who went on 7 overseas voyages to other kingdoms to trade & collect tribute  **Add to bottom of pg. 49**  Pi Sheng – printer who invented moveable type

6  Gobi – vast desert covering parts of China & Mongolia  Karakorum – capital of Mongolia prior to Khanbaliq  Khanbaliq – Mongol’s Chinese capital in northern China (present day Beijing)

7  Beijing – Modern Chinese city that stands on the site of Khanbaliq  Nanjing – Capital in south of Ming Dynasty  Portugal – European country; set up trading posts in China
