2 Why study history? -cultures change over time -Historians are people who study history ( Have students use high liters for key vocabulary in notes) -Explains why things are how they are -Helps to understand the present -Understand our human story

3 Measuring Time -Historians keep track of time Periods of History -Time can be measured in groups like decades (10 years) and centuries (100 years) or millennium (1,000 years) -Large blocks of time are eras -Prehistory is the time before writing developed -writing came 5,500 years ago -Ancient history began - Middle Ages began next -Last Modern History to present day

4 Calendars -Arranges days in order -Early calendars from Chines, Jewish, and Egyptians were based on the moon Julian Calendar -created by Julius Caesar and started at the founding of Rome -loses one day every 128 years Gregorian Calendar -created by the Pope started at the birth or death of Christ - still in use today

5 Dating Events -BC before Christ -AD anno domini (the year of our Lord) -Today historians use non-religious terms like BCE Before Common Era and CE Common Era

6 Using Time lines -Another tool to track time -shows order of events -shows amount of time between events -divided into sections of time -show flow of events

7 Digging Up the Past History and Science -Archaeology the study of the past looking at what people left behind -look for artifacts or objects people leave behind -tells about what life was like in the past -Paleontology the study of prehistoric times -look at fossils or remains of plants and animals preserved -Anthropology the study of human culture and how it develops Human Discoveries -Scientists discovered a skeleton called Lucy that was 3.2 million years old -Lucy walked upright like you and me

8 Output Page : Create a Timeline using 3 events 1.Event that happened before you were born 2.The day were born 3.Next, an event that happened AFTER you were born 4.Draw a picture on your timeline for each event 5.Use at least 4 colors Before your birthYour birthAfter your birth
