1. Poetry Unit Plan

2. Objective Students will explicate poems in a written paper with 100% accuracy.

3. Day 1 -We will do an in class reading of Alice Meynell’s “Maternity.” - We will discuss the meter and rhyme scheme of the poem.

4. Day 2 -We will discuss figurative language. -We will have a group discussion on the meaning of the poem. -Students will do a discussion post and post it to the class wikipage for homework.

5. Day 3 -We will do an in class reading of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “Runaway Slave at Pilgrim’s Point.” -Student’s will discuss in groups of 4 the rhyme scheme, meter, figurative language, and the meaning in the poem. -Student’s will post in a blog what they learned in their groups for homework.

6. Day 4 -Explication papers will be assigned. -Students will work on papers in class on the computer.

7. Day 5 -Students will work on papers on the computer in class. -Papers will be due at the end of the class period.

8. Material Used - Students will be given a printed version of the poem. -Students will use Microsoft Word to type their explications. -Students will post a blog online stating what they learned in their groups. -Students will do a discussion post and post it to the class wiki page.

9. Evaluation Students will be evaluated on Day 2 during group discussion. Students will be evaluated on what they learned from their groups through their blog posts. Students will be evaluated when they finish their papers on how well they are able to explicate on their own.
